This Sunday’s Grammy Awards is set to open with a tribute to Michael Jackson. There will be the 3D “Earth Song” from Michael’s canceled “This Is It” concert. Then a selection of pop stars including Smokey Robinson, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood and Usher is scheduled to perform a medley of Michael’s hits.
But what hasn’t been determined is who will accept Michael’s Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. Jackson is to be honored along with Bobby Darin, Loretta Lynn, Clark Terry, David Honeyboy Edwards, Andre Previn, and Leonard Cohen. Among the winners of the Trustees award are Florence Greenberg, founder of Scepter Records and subject of the new musical, “Baby It’s You.”As usual, though, the Jackson family is at odds over who’s supposed to receive the Grammy statue on Saturday at the late afternoon ceremony scheduled for the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Sources say that Michael’s brothers want to do the honors. But Jackson’s three children — Prince, Paris, and Blanket — have voiced opposition to this plan.
“The kids are tired of the brothers getting the attention. They want to stand up for their father.”
This tug of war has become a regular issue lately as the three kids grow more savvy about the Jackson family, and more aware of their own place in preserving their dad’s memory.
Meanwhile, Michael’s self-aggrandizing father, Joe Jackson, made little progress yesterday in his court battle to receive a shocking $20,000 per month allowance from his son’s estate.

We Mj fans do not want any of the brothers or Latoya to show their face anywhere near MJ’s tribute. Enough of the brothers freeloading MJ’s fame & huge public respect & love.
Least of all, weed not want to see Joe.
Michael, you are forever missed. But I wonder how you made it to 50 with that crazy family. Only Rebbie & Jackie have shown restraint.
January 29th, 2010 at 4:21 am
Okay, before this blog becomes a thread of 100 or more people debating on who’s worthy of accepting this award, let me say that IMHO I think that it should be one of the following:
1. Kids–if this story is true and the kids would like to speak on their father’s behalf, they should be allowed that privilege.
2. If this story is not true, then, I think it should be any of his family members—not just Jermaine or LaToya—but any of his siblings or nieces/nephews.
Bottom line: we can all debate on what we think we know about MJ and his family (based on interviews, stories, etc) but, at the end of the day, none of us knew them PERSONALLY, and, they are the ones who have AND will feel the affects of his passing the deepest and for many years to come. Therefore, they should be allowed the honor to accept it on their brother’s/uncle’s behalf.
January 29th, 2010 at 4:48 am
I think the children should accept the award. Only if they want to. The rest of Michael’s family would acceptable. I think Joe would be a hard pill to swallow. Considering Joe is treating like the ‘enemy’. I;m anxious to see who actually goes to recieve the award.
January 29th, 2010 at 5:46 am
I think this article is meant to trash the family. This is ridicules. The media did the same thing with Michael and now they are doing it with his family. Why don’t they leave them alone. At first everyone was saying that the kids should not be exposed, now everyone does not mind. That decision should be left up to the guardian and no one else. Geez you would think that the media would have some sense of dignity.
January 29th, 2010 at 6:03 am
DF, I agree with your comments.
Roger, you are late,CNN already discussed and without the accompanying drama you always attach to the family.
January 29th, 2010 at 6:44 am
Totally agree with DF. People have been attacking and unfairly judging this family since day one but the fact of the matter is no one really knows this family and its stupid to assume that they only care about the spotlight and not their son and sibling that they lost. Of course they are devastated over what happened and no amount of camera time is going to take away that pain. Anyways I highly doubt Roger knows anything about how the children feel and that they are “tired of the brothers getting all the attention”…can you say TABLOID GOSSIP!!!
January 29th, 2010 at 7:16 am
Roger, this tabloidy, non-sourced divination of how a 12, 11, and 7 year old “feel” about their family is beneath you. Before, you’ve at least attempted to credit unnamed sources that you have an “in” with for your information. This report is just speculative tripe that could have been off Sawfnews or the UK Sun. Bullcrap.
January 29th, 2010 at 8:00 am
I wish the media would leave this family alone. If Michael’s three kids would like to accept the award on their father’s behalf, they should be allowed. They are hurting like anyone else would. Just because this family is famous does not mean they don’t feel pain. I would love to see the kids accept, but if this is something against Michael’s wishes, then I think this should be considered, and I agree with DF that any one of the family members, including nephews etc should accept.
January 29th, 2010 at 8:23 am
Personally I think this is great news. The only family members given the honor of accepting rewards for Michael should be his children!
Prince and Paris are certainly old enough to be their Dad’s ambassadors and they will reassure Prince II (Blanket) as they are very closeknit siblings.
It’s not true that Michael didn’t want something like this for his children, he let them choose what they wanted to do and be, that is heard in several of his videos. Michael was a great teacher of life and he raised his children for these type of moments, I am sure he would be proud.
Michael’s children will do great things just like their Daddy, I’ve no doubt about that. They ARE Michael Jackson’s legacy.
It’s all for L-O-V-E.
I have loved and admired Michael for 40+ years and am very thankful to have his children in my life for the next 40+ years (Godwilling). THANK YOU MICHAEL!!!
No matter what the tabloids or trash reporters say about Michael NOTHING will ever make me love and admire him any less. Thank you Michael for capturing my heart bringing great joy into my life all these years. Thank you for the magic, I will NEVER let go of your hand. L.O.V.E. you forever and a day. God Bless you and your children.
Peace Unity Hope Faith beLIEve L.O.V.E.
~ Hugs ~
January 29th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Agree DF… and Rodger you’re late, the children will accept the award for Michael tomorrow afternoon.
January 29th, 2010 at 9:21 am
It doesn’t matter who they say will accept the award, his creepy father will bound onto the stage & use the time to plug whatever self serving venture he has at that moment, thus making a mockery of the ceremony!
January 29th, 2010 at 9:54 am
I agree. Mr. Friedman, you are almost always overdramaticizing “behind the scenes” goings on regarding Michael Jackson and railing on those who exploit MJ’s name for profit and gain. Ironically, you fail to recognize that you have, over the years, constantly exploit Michael Jackson for profit and gain in your “gossip column’s.” Consequently, you are the same as those you criticize. Incidentally, the tribute to Michael is not opening the Grammy’s so you got that wrong too!
January 29th, 2010 at 10:55 am
The ONLY people Michael would want to speak for him are his 3 children and perhaps his sister Janet.
You really think Jermaine and LaToya are loving siblings…OMG people
get a grip. Jermaine is just like his daddy Joseph…wake up peeps, smell that coffee! LaToya used to be cool but after she told the truth then took it back she’s been shall we say a little wack. Jackie, Marlon, Tito and Randy have not had it easy and probably need money because they get NO royalties at all from all of the Motown Hits because when they left Motown and went with CBS they had to give up all their royalty rights through a litigation and also had to pay Berry Gordy’s company a few million dollars…so you all figure it out. Duh and dur too.
January 29th, 2010 at 12:12 pm
Well all we know is what they show us!!!!!!If anyone can remember Laytoyas “attempted” claim to fame bashing,(God rest his soul) Micheal during the first alleged case.So definetly would be distasteful for her in my opinion…I vote the children who forever wil mourn the tragic lost of a wonderful father!!!
January 29th, 2010 at 12:59 pm
OK, I agree with comment #1, or at least partially.
IF the children want to stand up on behalf of their father, who is to say no? Michael would want them to stand for him. Wouldn’t he be so proud of his children for doing this for him? So if anyone, who is anyone reads this, please let everyone over the world is rooting for Mike’s children. They are so much a part of him and it is so obvious that they love their dad and he loved them.
And to be honest it would be nice to see the entire Jackson family go up there and stand behind the children so they all receive Michael’s award. I am talking about opening up that entire stage and making room for Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, every sibling, all of his brothers and sister-in-laws, and all of his nieces and nephews. I think that this world needs to see that this family is really a family instead of all this crap about them fighting. There no one bigger or more worthy for that award. The kids are Michael’s kids, that is different. But, it would be spectacular if the entire family went up there. And there needs to be alloted time for a speech – without the shepards’s hook.
NOW THAT IS SOMETHING THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED ON TV, AT AN AWARD SHOW, OR ANYWHERE ELSE, EVER.
January 29th, 2010 at 1:07 pm
SORRY, REVISION:
OK, I agree with comment #1, or at least partially.

I think that this world needs to see that this family is really a family instead of all this crap about them fighting. There is no one bigger or more worthy, in that family, to receive that award than Michael. He is the one that worked for the award. It is his accomplishments no one else that did the work. So since he can’t be there, for his kids to go up there, well they are Michael’s kids, that is different. But if Michael or just the kids can’t go up to get the award than it would be spectacular if the entire family went up to receive the award. And the Grammy’s also needs to alloted enough time for speeches. That is allow the speeches, regarding Michael, to happen without the shepards’s hook or the music going on.
NOW, if all of that happened, WOULDN’T IT BE SOMETHING THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED ON ANY TV, AWARD SHOW, OR ANYTHING ELSE FOR THAT MATTER? Talk about making History again
January 29th, 2010 at 1:35 pm
DF-I so agree with you!The kids should have been the ones accepting the awards for their Dad all along.Who knows, maybe they need to do this to get some sort of closure.Joe needs to stay out of it!!

[...] Michael Jackson: Who Will Accept His Grammy? [...]
January 29th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
If the kids want to go and accept this award for their Father, I think they should be allow too. I do agree that other family members should be there, like Mrs. Katherine Jackson, or Janet, maybe Randy. And Joe is still trying to get money from MJ’s estate. We can only guess all that MJ went through with his family.
January 29th, 2010 at 4:29 pm
A great and deserved honour to a magnificent artist and humanitarian. Love to see his kids and family accept the award on his behalf. What is wrong with people who always look for something negative and even use children to make a point. Its meanspirited and selfserved and has nothing to do with Michael Jackson. For those who really love him lets follow his example as a humanitarian and enjoy and be grateful for the beautiful, romantic, sensual, over the top, catchy, uplifting, comforting, profound, aware, funny, crazy, rocking music he gave us.
January 29th, 2010 at 6:57 pm
Who said the quoted statement…?
“The kids are tired of the brothers getting the attention. They want to stand up for their father.”
January 30th, 2010 at 2:30 am
It’s true we don’t know those people personally, but we do know Joe was left out of the will. Obviously there was a reason for that, so we can safely assume Michael wouldn’t want him on stage. There was also continuous controversy between Michael and the brothers regarding the reunion they always wanted and he did not, so because of that, they should not represent him at this time. LaToya once said he was guilty of child molestation, and even if she regretted that, she should be out.
That leaves the Katherine, the children, Janet, and/or nieces and nephews. Katherine – well. Maybe he would have liked that, he many times tried to get her on stage with him (according to himself) and she mostly said no. I don’t know if it’s good for the children to stand in the limelight, actually I doubt it, but if they really want to do it, they should. With our without Janet, who was closest to Michael (again according to himself) of the rest of the family.
January 30th, 2010 at 7:29 am
I agree with DF about Latoya. Jermaine is iffy in my mind too, but he did ok at the AMAs. If the children want to speak on their dad’s behalf, they should be allowed to in some capacity, but I don’t think that MJ would appreciate their appearing in public. Perhaps they could send a statement or appear in a video.
January 30th, 2010 at 7:46 am
Diana Ross should accept that shiznit and bring up Berry Gordy 2. If not the children, that is…
January 30th, 2010 at 7:48 am
@ Axon – your process of elimination was filled with arguments that suggest 2+2=1657.
Joe is out because he isn’t in the will? That argument is faulty because it eliminates EVERYONE except the kids and Katherine. He loved a lot of people.
His brothers are out because of their going back and forth on a tour? He did not want to work with them professionally is the only conclusion I can come to about that. Did you not see him plan to acknowledge them everynight after his motown medley in his 50 dates at the O2?
LaToya said some awful stuff, she sure did. They made up LONG before he died and he clearly accepted her apology as all the family did as evidenced by her ability to return home.
Family is complicated and you speak in such Black and White that I find it difficult to believe you could really think that way. The love of the family you were born into comes with some serious twists and turns but at the end of the day when the rest of the world seems to by unavaible, silly squabbles can be put into perspective because they are who’s left. I saw evidence of their understanding of that on June 13, 2005.
Personally, I don’t want to see Joe, LaToya or Jermaine because of purely selfish reasons. I can’t stand what I percieve to be their self-aggrandizement and lack of authenticity in front of a camera, but that’s MJ’s fam, not mine. I won’t make any assumptions about how HE felt about them.
January 30th, 2010 at 8:36 am
I agree, Shannon…Axon’s faulty logic really jumped out at me as well.
January 30th, 2010 at 9:24 am
Oh, it’s for them to decide (unless the estate executors think it’s for them), I was just trying to imagine what Michael would have thought about it. With Joe and the will I simply meant that with all the things going on between those two (the beating, the loss of childhood, the difficulty Michael had as he expressed in his own words to get close to his father) I doubt he would have approved of Joe as the one accepting the award. I am sure he loved his brothers, but there was always this issue about them trying to make him perform with them, and he did not want to do it – he did not want them in his professional life. He even hated it back at the Victory tour (as expressed in interviews, I am not making anything up here). He also paid an enormous amount of money to some of his siblings and everything around the Encino house. Now he is dead, and it doesn’t seem appropriate that they still get attention out of the relationship. Actually, you agree, don’t you?
He loved his children,he thought his mother was wonderful, and he felt he was close to Janet when they grew up. He also made Scream with her. Of the siblings, he said he was closest to her and she also has the talent.
So how come you don’t think my 2+2=4? It’s only my opinion, but I still think it makes sense. I am not just guessing, I am trying to understand what he might have liked himself, based on what he said and did over the years.
January 30th, 2010 at 10:42 am
People really don’t understand the Jackson family dynamics. The last family members Michael talked to were his mother and father, so get the notion out of your head that they didn’t communicate. HE WAS NOT close to Janet and Jermaine or any of his siblings in his last few years because he isolated himself from them especially after the trial even though they supported them.
And don’t believe anything that MJ supported his siblings. He pays for the Encino mansion because HE OWNS it. That was the house he grew up in California and took over the loans when his parents had to give it up.
Its only natural the Jacksons wanted to perforn with THEIR brother. At the beginning of next year, they came to terms with it and set out to do their own things as evident by the reality show.
January 30th, 2010 at 11:17 am
Ernestine: I doubt anyone knows who the last family members Michael communicated with were. What everyone knows, though, is that Michael had trouble with his father, and we know that because he told us. He told Oprah, he told the notorious Bashir and the notorious Boteach (and cried on tape). He did isolate himself from the family from time to time. He did not want to perform with his brothers although he was THEIR brother, they didn’t own him, but they didn’t get the message and never stopped trying. He paid not only for the house in Encino, but also for everything in it from food to security. (It wasn’t exactly the house he grew up in, btw, he tore that one down and built a new one on the same land.) He also paid for school for Jermaine’s children, and possibly child support.
Of course he loved his family, but as we have seen after his death, some of them (note, not all of them!) show a rather erratic behaviour.
January 30th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
I HOPE MJ’s KIDS accept his lifetime award and NO ONE else in his family!! if the jackson brothers want to accept an award, maybe they should have worked a little harder to EARN one. Michael gave a lifetime of entertainment and HIS KIDS should be there to accept on his behalf.
January 31st, 2010 at 4:15 am
Michaels sister and brothers said they last saw him in May at the anniversary party. Joe and Katherine last saw him after that. It is a fact too in interviews.
Yes, it will well documented about Michael problems with his dad. Yet in the same program, he said his father was a genius and everything was because of him. In addition, he said he got along better with his father per EBONY MAGAZINE special edition and his Oxford Speech, so fans need to let it go. MJ obviously moved on, and so should you.
The Jackson didn’t try to own MJ. They obviously wanted to perform with him, but I am sure they gave that up last year hence the reason why the reality show was started. If Michael the millionaire paid for Jermaine kids schooling, who cares. They were his nieces and nephews, so maybe he wanted to.FAMILY does that sometimes. Its not like Jermaine was racking in cash. Lets not forget how RANDY help secure loans to pay for MJ debts using borrowed money from friends and associates, yet MJ neglected to pay him back and left the country.
January 31st, 2010 at 5:24 am
I know about that party, and Janet also said she and Michael talked over the phone after that.
Now this discussion about details in the Jackson family life and what we fans “need” to let go because Michael tried to, is pretty silly. Btw, the reality show didn’t start because the brothers gave up on the the idea to make Michael perform with them, on the contrary heated discussions went on as late as last spring when MJ still said no. In spite of that, Joe J certainly kept the pressure on.
(Yes, I know about Randy getting loans to pay for Michael’s defense back in 2005, and now he had to file a claim to the estate.)
Again, what I tried to do on this little commentary field was merely speculating about who Michael would have liked to receive his award for him. That’s all. And I stick to my guns – the children, Janet and Katherine come to mind.
January 31st, 2010 at 7:11 am
I think the whole family should except it together but then i think prince, paris,And blanket should do it to because they wanna show some love for there dad so My opinion is optional!
January 31st, 2010 at 10:36 am
Well, did anyone see DiLeo coming? I was, umm, kinda shocked. But happy to hear the children will speak tonight during the actual ceremony, and according to ’sources’, Katherine has given it her blessing.
*gets Kleenex ready*
January 31st, 2010 at 11:11 am
No, Frank was a total surprise.
I can’t see it – is it on youtube? I suppose it will be, and tonight’s event too.
January 31st, 2010 at 11:59 am
Which of these things is not like the other – Joe Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, La Toya Jackson, Frank Di Leo? Whatever Michael JACKSON’S relationship with his family members, it was a travesty for an employee to accept MJ’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
January 31st, 2010 at 12:50 pm
I suppose Frank was asked to step in because family members could not agree on who should collect the prize.
January 31st, 2010 at 1:36 pm
axon – why would you suppose that? It’s just as likely, if not more likely, that the producers of the event didn’t do their job and make sure that a family member was enlisted to accept the award.
January 31st, 2010 at 10:02 pm
Simba, I supposed it because family members have had trouble agreeing on many things Michael after his death, but maybe you’re right.
February 19th, 2010 at 12:32 am
Screw the media and the joke commonly referred to as “the American music industry!” Why is this F&#)ING pervert even getting his name mentioned anymore?
