EXCLUSIVE: This column has learned that Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie are planning a massive 25th anniversary re-recording of “We Are the World.”
The timing couldn’t be better, sadly enough.
The duo is summoning lots and lots of talent from Grammy weekend to stay an extra night — Monday Feb. 1 — and come to the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. There, they will celebrate a quarter century since Ken Kragen, Richie and Michael Jackson organized the original “We Are the World” with Quincy.
This time the artists invited include Usher, Natalie Cole, and John Legend. But you can bet that more names will be added shortly and that all the Grammy nominees and participants will be asked to come as well. Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich will produce the event, which will then be turned into a video and single just like it was in 1985. Don’t be surprised if Wyclef Jean joins in, along with Sting, Fergie, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake and other distinctive voices.
It’s hoped that as in 1985, everyone will “leave their egos at the door.”
Originally, this anniversary celebration was to be held on Jan. 28. But when the Haiti earthquake happened, sources tell me, the whole deal changed. Now proceeds will go to Haiti relief. In 1985, “We Are the World,” which begat Live Aid, raised money for Africa relief.
Plans are still sketchy, but one thing’s for sure: In some way, the song’s co-author Michael Jackson will be invoked. AEG is co-producing this event. They’re also putting together a 3D tribute to Michael for the Grammy show from elements Jackson was going to use for his tour. Jackson recorded “We Are the World” for what became “This Is It.” Surely he’ll be included here as well, which will make the whole project even more poignant.
Stay tuned. PS: Quincy Jones is about to release what has been described to me as a landmark new album that he’s made with contemporary R&B and hip hop artists. He was responsible for the original “We Are the World” and will guide the new one. He is not a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in case you were wondering.

Wonderful….that sounds great….I’m a buyer.
January 20th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
Wonderful news…. bring it on!
January 20th, 2010 at 8:05 pm
Wow! This is what I’ve been hoping for since Michael passed away. His humanitarian efforts continuing forever.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:13 pm
I will purchase it if, and only if, MJ is included in it. Otherwise I will continue to donate monies to other organizations. If MJ is included, I will make multiple purchases.
I’m still burning over the MJ Opus ordeal! Grrrrrrr

wow…this is stupendous…you guys are the best…only the best for you Haiti…I love you Haiti !
January 20th, 2010 at 11:47 pm
It won’t be the same without Michael Jackson. Michael wrote practically the “We Are The World” song. Michael should be with them celebrating and helping those in Haiti.

Hum, yea, this is a a money raising event that will be sent to help in some way on the haiti disaster, right?
I only read about the original one being a fund raiser, i read nothing about this one being one also.
Just because i’ve seen it happening and someone else pocketed the money in the end instead.
Singing for a humanitarian cause with self profit ranks as a new low, hope it’s not what’s happening here.
January 21st, 2010 at 3:05 am
I don’t get it. They’re recording a song for Haiti? Or for Haitians? Are they going to sing it for the Haitians to make them feel better? Are these people going to care if they hear it? This is a stupid idea. Just donate money/food/whatever. Doing anything else is not only a waste of time, but kind of lame. Especially this song. Seriously? Bleh.

Please don’t. I still have diabetes from the last one. The previous group (or whatever it was) at least had some heavy hitters in it. I can’t imagine the collection of talentless mental deficients that would be assembled today. Beyonce comes to mind (but doesn’t stay there long). Maybe JayLo??, Jello??? Jimbo??? whatever.. will dazzle us with some of that biting and insightful standup comedy she displayed on that George Lopez show I didn’t see.
January 21st, 2010 at 5:02 am
Who is Michael Jackson? He is dead?!?! How can he “take part” then?
Oh, I get it!
The fat bankers who own what piddly old recordings are still in Mike’s debt-encrusted estate are going to try to get some old pictures of Michael into the new show so they can collect a few bucks in royalties. It’s like rolling out a taxidermied corpse and selling tickets at a peep show. And Quincy/Richie (two OTHER old corpses) are going to help.
January 21st, 2010 at 5:10 am
Michael would have been proud and all over this. Thanks for all the music Quincy!!!
January 21st, 2010 at 5:10 am
Please tell me this is a joke. Please.
January 21st, 2010 at 5:16 am
Why does everyone play down Michael Jackson’s contribution to “We Are The World” he wrote the song with help from Lionel Richie, not the other way around. Jackson also produced and recorded the demo solo, which the final version is based on. “We Are The World” was Michael’s idea, Michael’s project, because Michael cared, he didn’t just jumped on causes like this because it was good PR, that can’t be said for a lot of today’s artists.

January 21st, 2010 at 5:23 am
Considering the vast majority of the money raised from the original show went into the corrupt pockets of the murderous military junta ruling in Ethiopia; seems like a GREAT idea…
Kinda like electing a community organizer to run the only superpower on a planet…funny how the same idiots facilitated both….makes you realize that money can’t buy intelligence; huh?
January 21st, 2010 at 5:29 am
What a great idea. The timing as you say is apropos and with (Michael) guiding the way, it’s sure to be another hit!!!
January 21st, 2010 at 5:36 am
Beautiful, could they write a good song this time? Can the B listers also please lol.
January 21st, 2010 at 5:37 am
Is money the real problem here. Haven’t we given Haiti billions since Clinton in the early 90’s. Let’s get real. All this does is make us feel good. Other than that it does nothing.
January 21st, 2010 at 5:37 am
Lydia Lunch should be invited.
January 21st, 2010 at 6:03 am
Just donate 100% of your purchase price directly to a real aid agency. And make sure that aid agency isn’t like Wyclef’s… wasting money on paying for rent in NYC offices, and paying himself for his performance at a fund raiser.
January 21st, 2010 at 6:08 am
Did u mean Michael Jackson re recorded We Are The World for This Is It?? Meaning his new vocals will be used on the new version??? I’m confused…
January 21st, 2010 at 6:13 am
As usual, the money will be wasted and the stars will be paid handsomely. Don’t give through this. Just give directly to charity.

Today’s artists have only egos going for them. If they leave ego at the door, there will be nothing left lolol….
Leave we are the world to michael jackson and the rest of the people can go back to bed.
I will not buy this. Get the original.
January 21st, 2010 at 7:11 am
If I remember correctly hardly any of the first “We Are The World” money ever got distributed. I remember interviews with some of the celebraties who were asked if they knew where the money went and none did.
January 21st, 2010 at 7:21 am
So….what has the previous effort changed? Oh yeah! this way we can forget about those poor b#stards for another 25 years.
January 21st, 2010 at 7:25 am
I actually heard that Michael’s voice from re-recordings of We Are The World would be used. But I don’t remember having seen We Are The World on the setlist of the This Is It concerts..
January 21st, 2010 at 7:34 am
Well the first one did pretty much nothing for sending food to Africa… most of the supplies that were sent rotted on the docks due to corrupt leaders and politicians. Meanwhile the people still staved. Great job Quincy!
I really wish people would stop allowing producers/writers/directors to continually remake “classics” instead of creating something new. This laziness is just unbearable.
January 21st, 2010 at 7:36 am
oh yeah,save the world,,,,,raise more money for warlords,love me mommy,WHAT A JOKE!

I think it is only fitting that Michael Jackson be part of this, thank you Quincy.
January 21st, 2010 at 7:56 am
Instead of singing “Cum Bi Ya” then going back to life as usual how about getting on site and helping feed and care for people here and there that are in need.
Nothing but a PR stunt.
January 21st, 2010 at 8:13 am
Better have some legends like Cher, Dolly, Manilow, Tony Bennett on this!
January 21st, 2010 at 8:19 am
I still remember this song when I was in high school. IMO it brought the people together and made them think about helping other people and other countries. Great song and it lifted people spirits, Great job Quincy.
January 21st, 2010 at 8:27 am
How about these “performers” get off their butts, grab a shovel and fly to Haiti and do something of value? Now that would be CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN”!!
January 21st, 2010 at 8:28 am
It will never be as genuine as the one back in 85. If they don’t get MJ vocals on it, it’s really gonna suck.
January 21st, 2010 at 8:30 am
I sure would rather have Mike here to help them sing though…
January 21st, 2010 at 8:34 am
I always worry about whether or not the proceeds from these benefit concerts, recordings, etc., actually gets to the people who actually need it.
January 21st, 2010 at 8:44 am
Enough with these telethons and sound tracks by the over indulgent enternatinment industry. Put your money where you like to put your mouth and right big checks. You can more then afford it. I have no desire to “watch” you sing for my money…money that I have already donated at both work fund raising efforts and also from my personal account. Tell you what, I’ll type memos and you can watch me work and you send your donation to Haiti.
January 21st, 2010 at 8:45 am
“It’s hoped that as in 1985, everyone will “leave their egos at the door.” Oh Yeah, that is going to happen.
January 21st, 2010 at 8:49 am
Please let me sing in this song!
I want to do something good for others!

You know what’s happened after the last three “Feed the This” or “Free the That” concerts?
Third world dictators are infused with millions of American dollars and food stuffs. In other words, bleeding hearts keep funding the reasons why the peoples of those countries are starving.
The thugs steal everything that gets sent there.

Where were these guys when the tsunami devasted Asia a couple years ago? Oh, those were not black folks. I get it now.

what is wrong with these people?
January 21st, 2010 at 9:19 am
Be sure to include J4 (Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon). Also Diana Ross and LaToya and Randy were in the original as well.
Old with the new
January 21st, 2010 at 9:31 am
Oh, this is so wonderful! What we need is a new “We Are the World.” Now we can all forget about 10% unemployment, illegals flooding the borders, rising taxes, debt as far as the eye can see, terrorists still making it on planes and attacks on the U.S. constitution. All that stuff is so uncool…..boooorrrrring.
Lets sing together and enjoy the new world order where we have all been reduced to poverty equally (well except for all the rich singers in “We Are the world.”) It’s fun to feel good.
January 21st, 2010 at 9:32 am
yawn.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:00 am
Ugh. They had me until the whole Michael Jackson thing. This is going to be like Streisand retiring. She’ll never retire and they’ll never move on from MJ. Jesus. Do something NEW for the people of Haiti and move forward in time.
Not buying this. I’ll donate another way.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:01 am
Typical clueless liberal. Reports of fresh job losses, more and more banks are failing and Russia divesting themselves of the dollar and backing Canadian money. Under Obama, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to call it “We are the third world”? Better get out of ostrich mode, you have bankrupted the country and turned us into an irrelevant player on the world stage. All in just one year, congrats boneheads. Pretty soon 3rd world countries will be putting on benefit concerts for us.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:02 am
I wonder if Quincy Jones will ever give Michael Jackson any credit for his talent now.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:04 am

January 21st, 2010 at 10:06 am
Are the kids going to be there again?
January 21st, 2010 at 10:11 am
The only way to save Africa is to overthrow the dictators and Communists who have destroyed and ravaged these countries for decades, introduce capitalism and impose the US Constitutional form of government on the new government. Then you will not need a bunch of over-the-hill Leftist has-been musicians trying to make a buck on the backs of the poor, starving Africans. Shame on you!
January 21st, 2010 at 10:17 am
It’s nice to make music to sell for a good cause, but I’d be more impressed if these people actually reached into their own pockets and gave money. A precedent set by Sammy Davis on the Jerry Lewis telethon, he not only performed, he donated a six figure check. Now that’s character.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:18 am
Will Prince be unenvited from this one too??
.
Either way, it will be a remake – just like the remake of the “The Karate Kid” thats comming out this summer.
.
.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:23 am
How about they just donate part of there huge wealth instead of having a song that no one will buy.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:33 am
I think that ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ begat Live-Aid, not ‘We Are The World’.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:35 am
Please,How about they just send their own money instead of cooking up ways to get us to do it. I’m really sick of celebrities. They act like we wouldn’t think of being charitable unless they pushed us into it. I ready to have them step up to the microphone and tell us what percentage of their income are they giving.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:39 am
Ditto Kala! If they are really concerned about getting help to the poor people in Haiti, why won’t they just put their money where their mouth is? How is it “charitable” for them to get together for a “feel-good” recording session in which they are giving up nothing to help these people? In my opinion it’s just an egotistical publicity stunt to get their names recognized.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:39 am
Gee, will the results be the same with boatloads of food and medical supplies hoarded by the country’s warlords and dictators? I choose to send my money elsewhere. BTW. It is impossible for any of you to ‘leave your egos at the door’. All your ‘benefits’ are nothing but ego affairs. Just sign your checks in private over to the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders and stay off the air.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:42 am
BINGO!! Great point.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:54 am
Nobody cared about these people living in squalor until NOW? And people think an Island that is drastically overpopulated, deforested, not enough water to support the population can be fixed with music and money? Are you people stupid? I think this is being used as political poverty porn. Nothing will be done to raise these people out of squalor. Its debatable that anything can actually be done with the current population level.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:58 am
After I read this article, i had vomit in my mouth. Lame…do something original already…and let’s start helping Americans! There are plenty of hungry, disabled, unemployed who aren’t getting any help here at home. Why don’t we ever do anything for ourselves???
January 21st, 2010 at 11:24 am
With that cast of characters, the song could be entitled “We Hate The USA”.
January 21st, 2010 at 12:06 pm
Well, there sure are some cynical bastards on this site but I understand why, you’ll never be happy but you’ll never be disappointed either… nice.
I hope it does well and I hope, not only is money raised and it gets to the proper hands, but the message is felt in the hearts of millions and that translates into deeds carried out in our own back yards.

So, IOW, Shannon, you ‘hope’ for ‘change’. Got it. Liberal bitch.
January 21st, 2010 at 12:35 pm
Shannon, you must be under 25 and not up on current events. For all the Shannons who overuse the word hope—– the “cynical bastards” you refer to are the ones who actually know the TRUTH that the U.S. has sent millions of dollars to Haiti and many other poor countries year after year after year. The citizens are still poor as dirt and the “leaders” (dictators) are living in multimillion dollar mansions with gold-plated toilet seats. Throwing money alone at the problems HAS NOT WORKED and will not work until the corruption stops.
I hope you understand now.

More tree-hugging hogwash. Give your money to the Red Cross or some other reputable relief agency to aid the Haitians. The song was saccharine then, and it’s syrup now.

What a bunch of crap telethons by celebrities are!!!!! the cost incurred to advertise, pay for sponsors, airtime, costumes, transportation etc……will eat at the money raised that very little will get to those in Haiti. If they really wanted to help why don’t they give even 1% of their gross and then just encourage the general public to give???? they aren’t doing that because they wouldn’t get the publicity these individuals live for……..THIS is their reward on earth; no more, no less…………what a joke all of this is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How wonderful, a bunch of millionaires making a song together every twenty five years so they can give away the money we give to them. Dig deep you losers and just give your money, forget all the publicity stunts. Your right hand shouldn’t even know what you left hand is doing. That which you do before men has already been rewarded. Such is life when it is spent seeking the approval of men instead of God. Sorry I’m not buying. I don’t give to get, I just give.

If you really want to raise a lot of money perhaps the individual who has Michael Jackson’s nose could donate to be auctioned off on ebay. I am sure there are plenty of bleeding hearts out there who would love to see it hanging in their living room, or better yet hang it in the kids room.

This time, hopefully the ridiculous lyrics, “as God has shown us…by turning stones to bread…” will be omitted as that never happened in the Bible which is the reference for that phrase, and shows a true lack of knowledge of the Bible. The devil tempted Jesus to turn stones to bread, and Jesus refused, citing “Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word of the mouth of God”. To say He did turn stones to bread is blasphemy and a careless demonstration of how many of those famous singing people are clueless about the Bible and never caught the mistake.

Michael’s humanitarian efforts in time, talent and money were huge. He used his fame to be an advocate for children always and he personally helped them anywhere he went. I can’t speak for or support anyone’s motives in this remake. I do know, however, if Michael were still alive, exactly what his motives would be.
As for cruel attacks and attempts at humor at the expense of someone so pure in intention, you (and you know who you are) represent the worst of humanity.

Celebrities should give directly. Or form pools to hire doctors, buy equipment, rent planes and send it over immediately.

In this new version i hope to hear Ricky Martin

THEY BEST BE INCLUDING MICHAEL IN THIS SOMEHOW !!!!!!!!!!!
January 26th, 2010 at 9:25 pm
it’s redundant and pointless. q is always talking about not living in the past; what exactly is this? the pool of talent they collect now would be a joke compared to what they had then: michael, ray charles, steve perry, stevie wonder, etc. leave the original alone and move on to a new project.

Lisa,
I’m with you I hope that Steve Perry is on it if they do in fact redo this song! After all he is “The Voice”!
Debs
January 28th, 2010 at 6:29 pm
Please bring back Steve Perry from journey to sing on this afterall he has the greatest voice of all times. He was on the first one he should be on this one!!!
January 29th, 2010 at 8:44 am
As long as “The Voice” of the great Steve Perry is included… I’ll buy that! Otherwise, not interested…
January 29th, 2010 at 12:38 pm
I will only listen to and buy this song if Michael Jackson’s voice is on it as per the original. Otherwise, it would be a huge insult that Michael would be excluded from the song HE mostly wrote and made famous. Michael Jackson was the draw then AND now. Quincy, I trust that you will do the right thing by Michael. We can always donate to Haiti in other ways. INCLUDE MICHAEL and it will sell millions.

There’s been all this talk about “We are the World” and bringing it back. But where is Bob Wolf, the man who started it all? Where is he? What does he think about this new “We Are the World?”

…don’t know why “sequel” would be used to describe this event. It’s a 25 year anniversary and this is a new day with the proposal meant for Haiti. It’s more a revival than a sequel.
QUINCY, HOPE YOU WILL CONSIDER THIS IN NYC !!!!!!!
Why, because it’s referred to as the crossroads of the world for valid reasons, there is a huge Haitian population in NY, it’s closer in proximity to Haiti and Stevie Winder just became a Peace Keeper with The United Nations which is also in NYC.
This is an exciting idea !!!
I love it ! !

I think this is a great idea. Afterall, we have completely rebuilt the homes and lives of the residents of New Orleans who lost everything in the flooding. The people who suffered in that disaster have had their lives and homes completely restored. Unemployment in this country has virtually been erased. Universal health care is a reality. Medical insurance for unemployed Americans and Americans on fixed incomes is now dirt cheap, not to mention the ridiculously inexpensive cost of prescriptions for the elderly. The American farmer is in great shape, and the American Indian lives with an abundance of creature comforts. By all means lets all sing…

Not exactly. FIRST came Bob Geldof and Midge Ure’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” featuring an all star cast of British recording artists known as BAND-AID which began Live Aid….
“We Are The World” came after “Do They Know It’s Christmas” and wasn’t nearly as good…!!!

I find it in bad taste these so called hypocrite entertainers would always jump the bandwagon for self promotion to rip off the public. Again this time using the Haiti tragedy as their stepping stone.

is it impossible for hollywood to have a new thought. they cant think up a new script to save their asses and now this. smudging a classic song with teenie boppers like the jonas brothers and acotrs with no singing tallent. this is retarded.

I like what they are doing to help Haiti. It’s very creative and inspiring and brings a great song from the past to a new generation. However, I agree with some people that Michael Jackson would make this song ten times better and if he were still alive there is no doubt in my mind he would be a part of this. To the people who don’t agree, no offence, but at least they are being productive and trying to help unlike some of you who just like to complain. What have you done to help this diaster in Haiti. We can always have some extra help in funding money and nothing negative can come from this.

February 7th, 2010 at 8:07 am
How much of the money raised by this is actually goimg to the people of Haiti? 80%? 60%? Where is the money actually going? What about all the expences of this recording project, will the donatioms pay for that? Is anyone other that the Hatians making money off this?
February 10th, 2010 at 7:30 am
The proceeds are going to “We Are The World Foundation LLC”. That’s right, LLC, not a non-profit. Guess who is a board member? Randy Phillips. And since he’s a director, he is also entitled to pay himself a director’s fee of however much he wants. That is after he deducts the fees for producing the music and the video. So how much will go to Haiti after it passes through Randy Phillips’s hands? And don’t forget that this is not a charity, so it does not need to be accountable to the public.
I urge all MJ fans to boycott this latest ripoff. Please give your money directly to REAL aid organisations, not Randy Phillips!

I’m a Big MJ fan too. And they got to put him or his family in there some how…Thanks

No Thanks…Will not be buying. Should have come up with a new song.
Been there done that.
February 13th, 2010 at 6:26 am
I will donate to the Haiti relief fund but I would not pay one cent for the remake of We Are The World… it was terrible. Quincy Jones should be ashamed of turning a great song into a gangster rap video.
February 14th, 2010 at 6:56 am
Yeah, I’m with GMan51. The casualties brought about by the tsunami in Asia was far worst than what happened to Haiti. Where were these guys???
