This is exclusive to this column: Actor George Clooney is planning to host a telethon to raise money for the people of Haiti next Friday on all the MTV channels.
George told me last night at a private reception for his movie “Up in the Air” at the Monkey Bar — hosted by Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter and Paramount’s Brad Grey. Clooney is putting out the call today to all his celebrity friends and performers to participate from both coasts on Friday, January 22nd — and he’s gotten MTV’s Judy McGrath to agree to air the show on MTV, VH-1, etc. That may be one reason McGrath was a guest at last night’s shindig.
Clooney, in a celebratory mood over “Up in the Air,” has gotten producer Joel Gallen, the guy who handled the famous 9-11 telethon on all the networks, to produce the show. At last night’s party he started in by buttonholing Sting — who came to the Monkey Bar with wife Trudie Styler — to participate. Sting merely asked, “Where do I go?” and Clooney was off to the races.
Meanwhile George had more celebrating to do last night. It was his dad’s birthday. George bought Nick — who came into the Monkey Bar late with George’s mom, Nina — a signed first edition of Arthur Miller’s classic “Death of A Salesman.” Just so the gift didn’t seem too ‘heavy,’ George gave his dad a birthday card that he himself illustrated, wishing him a happy 90th. The picture George drew showed an old man on a cane. Nick was not amused, but everyone got a big kick out of it.
And everyone — I mean, everyone — included Michael Douglas, keeping busy while wife Catherine Zeta Jones was doing her nighttime performance of “A little Night Music” on Broadway, plus “Up in the Air” director/writer Jason Reitman, his own dad, Ivan Reitman and mom Genevieve, “Up in the Air” co-star Anna Kendrick, Woody Harrelson (in a wide brimmed black hat), Liz Smith, Bob and Lynne Balaban, Albert Maysles, Ronald Perelman, CAA’s Bryan Lourd, Tovah Feldshuh, writer/director Paul Schrader, writer/director Paul Haggis, famed book editor Jerry Howard, and a very tight-lipped Lorne Michaels, who declined very nicely to say a word about the Conan/Jay disaster. Lorraine Bracco, who’s got two pilots cooking for TV, had a reunion with “Sopranos” creator David Chase. We need Dr. Melfi back on the tube!
Spike Lee, who was busy chatting about his upcoming documentary sequel to his “When the Levees Broke,” took Sting aside. “I love that song, Soul Cake,” Lee said, emphasizing the first word. Sting laughed, changing the emphasis. “It’s soul cake,” he said, “not that kind of Soul.” It turns out Spike Lee is a big Sting fan. When he praised Sting’s first solo album, “Dream of the Blue Turtles,” the singer told him he was going to re-release the CD totally remixed. “It’s going to have a lot more punch.” For a while Sting and Vanity Fair writer Christopher Hitchens also discussed God. But that’s another whole story.
Meanwhile, Trudie Styler got very cozy with Maysles, and starting planning a new documentary.
Around the room, there was plenty of talk about some other upcoming Paramount films including Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island.” One exec told me that the postponed film, now set for February release, would simply have been too dark for a Christmas release. “Wait til you see Leonardo DiCaprio,” I was warned. “It’s an Oscar performance.”
Paramount is also gearing up for “Iron Man 2,” “Transformers 3,” with Shia LaBeouf and “Indiana Jones 5,” with Shia LaBeouf, not to mention a J.J. Abrams sequel to “Star Trek.”
But wait — Ivan Reitman, who told this column about a potential “Ghostbusters” film a few weeks ago, is amused by all the subsequent talk, chatter, speculation and blogging. “It just grows and grows,” he laughed. “And nothing new has happened.” Got that?

I don’t mean to be negative, but this is one time when I’m glad not to have cable. I admire George’s effort (he’s so cool) but I for one am tapped out. I’m sure there is lots of money out there in America, but I don’t think this telethon will be that successful.
January 14th, 2010 at 5:07 am
Great reapeat idea! Watch the cash though, his 911 gig lost it for a long time.
January 14th, 2010 at 5:14 am
How about if George just calls up all his rich Hollywood friends and they all contribute half their money to the cause? I’m sure they will all be happy to give up THEIR money!! After all they are all liberals who think we should share the wealth. How about if they share their wealth first!
January 14th, 2010 at 5:25 am
Loony Clooney should move there. He is a totally useless human and a waste of CO2. Just like the fool in the White House.
January 14th, 2010 at 5:31 am
Just like a celebrity like Clooney to ask for money from average citizens suffering under this economy when he himself could contribute a thousand times that which a middle class person could send. Just like the old Farm Aid concerts and Bangladesh. The celebrities capitalize on the tragedy to get face time and ask the plebecites to give up a day’s pay. Rubbish!
January 14th, 2010 at 5:32 am
How about a telathon for all the unemployed people here in America!!
I’m sure the millions of people who have been out of work for a year or more will want to give a portion of there unemploymentbenefits away!!!
January 14th, 2010 at 5:32 am
Defeatist and negative attitude Sally. Well done.
January 14th, 2010 at 5:35 am
I have an idea. What say us nobodies put on a show, the celebrities can watch us perform, and then THEY contribute their money. They sure have a lot more of it than we do.
January 14th, 2010 at 5:37 am
Fantastic George! You have shown your dedication to helping others, your benevolent nature, as great as you are cool!
January 14th, 2010 at 5:42 am
I am glad he is doing it, but the sooner the Progressives in this country realize we are broke, the better. We have to feed our own families and many are doing this without homes and now jobs.
Where is our telethon? How long will they ignore the poor and homeless in this country?

If anyone needs proof that the conservatives are the evil party of no, all one has to do is witness the difference in reaction. While progressive talking heads are trying to do all they can to help and reach out, conservative talking heads are blaming it on crazy pacts with devil or lashing out at the president for promising support. I don’t know, just saying. It is what it is.
January 14th, 2010 at 5:57 am
I’m so tried of celebrities like George Clooney making tragedies about them, do Americans really need actors to go on T.V and tell them to donate in some dumb Telethon, in this day and age with the millions of ways to reach people through social media, the internet, cable, those who can and want to donate money will, they don’t need a bunch of narcissistic actors making a big production about it, using it to shill for themselves to get press and attention under the pretence of ‘ helping out’.
January 14th, 2010 at 6:01 am
Will this money be mismanaged and unaccounted for like the 9/11 telethon money Mr Clooney?
January 14th, 2010 at 6:03 am
Go George keep your libtard face in the public with the idea that this is your calling in bollywood. The telethon would be better off with a real person, that people can relate too, doing that job
January 14th, 2010 at 6:07 am
Yeah, I’ll pass on watching Clooney. Why doesn’t he gather up all of his Hollywood buddies, and they can have their own telethon and donate millions and millions, instead of asking the American public, who is so generous but hurting right now financially. I will donate something, but I am not sure that my $20 will make as big of an impact as Hollywood’s multi-millions…
January 14th, 2010 at 6:08 am
I hate to get political during a disaster of this magnitude, but I think a telethon would be much more successful with someone much less partisan
January 14th, 2010 at 6:08 am
The world mourns the tragedy of Haiti but let’s face it, their governtment is one of the most corrupt in the world and imo, the likelihood of money, supplies, and aid getting to the intended victims is small to none. Very sad.
January 14th, 2010 at 6:17 am
Oh yeah, a telethon … Like the one you did after 9/11? The one in which less than 5 cents of every dollar collected for the victims and their families actually got to the victims and their families? I’ll be right on that one George, right after I give some money to Sally Struthers …
January 14th, 2010 at 6:20 am
OK, have had a moment to think about this. This Hollywood crap just doesn’t sit well with me. Here you have folks worth millions. Clooney owns a private island off the coast of Italy. Why hold a telethon soliciting money from average folks when he could simply reach into his own damn pocket and foot the bill for the entire reconstruction? I mean, come on folks, this is galling! Clooney should just be hosting Hollywood fundraisers and leave us hard-up average folk the hell alone. I’ll give my money to the Red Cross, not to this narcissitic jerk.

I’m all for helping out the victims in Haiti….but(correct me if I’m wrong)I dont recall MTV jumping out in front to help out the victims of Katrina! If anything they jumped on the bash Bush bandwagon at that time!
January 14th, 2010 at 6:21 am
Oh god no. Haiti needs real help, not the typical show boating be grandstanders. No one watches Clooney’s movies (consider his last 5…), he’s purely a manufactured Hollywood illusion of an industry desperately trying to invent icons and “must-see” actors, and so no one will watch this mess. Problem is that nobody in real America really cares about Clooney except to make fun of him.
At least, for comedic value Kanye West will probably stumble onstage in a stupor to claim credit for something or other…
January 14th, 2010 at 6:21 am
Oh, Lord. The smug will be so thick no one will be able to breathe.
January 14th, 2010 at 6:21 am
Hey George, Mahrer, Garofolo, Moore, Penn and the rest of your ilk,
We don’t need you and your Hollywood buddies striding across the stage with your dour faces telling us to give money. Call your buddies Chavez and Castro. They’ll be glad to help. But who is it that is down there helping now and got a air control tower up in 24 hours so planes can land to bring aid quickly? Oh yeah it was the big bad US military special ops. The churches of this great nation have been sending humanitarian and medical missions teams down there for 50+ years without you needing to tell them to do so. Me and my ilk are already on the job.
Signed a proud tea party, church-going, military-loving American
January 14th, 2010 at 6:22 am
where were George and MTV when Galveston was wiped out a Hurricane.
January 14th, 2010 at 6:28 am
Why does it take George Clooney?
January 14th, 2010 at 6:32 am
….. or he could ask his friends to donate some of their money…. its a tax write off, oh wait… they don’t pay taxes anyway, they just want US to pay taxes, and US to give money for causes THEY supposedly believe in
January 14th, 2010 at 6:39 am
Why can’t Mr. Clooney just donate his own money, to the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders. Heck, why doesn’t he ask his Hollywood friends to do the same. This would speak volumes. With so many Americans out of work – I personally know of 10 friends and family members and they don’t have extra money to give. It takes a lot of nerve to ask people to give at this time.
January 14th, 2010 at 6:42 am
He should be doing this on a network where the targeted audience can contribute. MTV’s viewers are way too young since most are either trying to pay off college loans or will simply ask their parents since they are still in high school.
January 14th, 2010 at 6:44 am
When I’m 90, I hope my children give me a better birthday present than George’s father got. Seems George might not really know his father very well.
January 14th, 2010 at 6:49 am
I’m glad that there are some people like him in order to try to make a difference… hope this show will be scheduled even outside the USA.
January 14th, 2010 at 6:50 am
[...] George Clooney in on of the few acts of his that I approve of is planning on hosting a telethon to help raise funds to help the Haitians. [...]
January 14th, 2010 at 6:59 am
So glad that George is going to host a telethon……Why doesn’t he instead just pick up his phone, and call, Spielberg, Penn, Pitt, and all of his Millionaire friends and just ask them to take care of Haiti, God knows, they are the only ones who can afford to give money away at this time. The rest of America is out of work and just struggling to keep a roof over their own heads, and food on their own table!!!
But hey, good ole George just brought in over 50 million on his last movie, so he and his other ELITE friends can take care of Haiti’s needs all by themselves.
January 14th, 2010 at 7:00 am
I love when the Hollywood Celebs come out inn drives to ask people with less money than they have to donate to the current crisis. Woo HOO!
The US will, as always donate the lions share of the aid, its what we do. The rest of the world will, of course, blame the USA for their life’s problems and denounce US imperialism. But we’ll help anyway, because thats what we do. The right thing.
Anyone wanting to donate really ought to check out the .org they are donating to first to see what percentage of their donation is kept for “administrative costs”.
January 14th, 2010 at 7:02 am
Newsflash to Clooney and MTV. Obama the great has already robbed the American people of their life savings. We have nothing left to give. Why dont you pompus movie “stars” donate some of your millions?
January 14th, 2010 at 7:06 am
Not that I am against helping people out in their time of need, but we have been dumping money into Haiti for many, many years and it hasn’t seemed to make much difference. I applaud the relief efforts by anyone involved but I really hope the money and supplies reach the right people. And I agree with Sally. Why not just hit up the Hollyweird megarich for donations and save all the overhead of such an event?
January 14th, 2010 at 7:27 am
Why don’t all the millionaire moviestars just donate the money rather than going on tv to try to convince regular people to give money that they don’t possess?
January 14th, 2010 at 8:03 am
It’s a horrible shame that the citizens of Haiti have to suffer even more in this disaster because of their super corrupt government which has not managed to provide basic services for the public despite receiving millions of dollars from the US every year. Let’s all help them not only heal and recover from this disaster, but also from their leadership disaster. Make sure that the money you raise now does not go back into the black hole of governmental theft.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:04 am
Oh boy another celebrity telethon, where celebrities can use their two digit IQ’s to blame the earthquake on Bush and Palin. maybe clooney can do his Charlton Heston routine again, garnering him lots of laughter from the syphocants and wanna be hanger on crowd. Oh boy
January 14th, 2010 at 8:06 am
Honestly, if those people really care as much as they say they do, they would have cancelled their parties, etc. and used the money and resources instead to help Haiti.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:12 am
I would respect hollywood a lot more if I knew they were donating their multi-millions of dollars as well as giving up their “precious time” to ask me to give what little I have. I already donate what I can on a monthly basis.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:21 am
Well Sally most people can still afford a night at the movies and instead of dropping the money on that they can stay home and watch the best entertainers in the business and give the money to a good cause. It will be a success because people come to the rescue of those in need, and that will never change.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:29 am
I hate to say this but a full of themselves variety show is not what we need these celebrities to do. Clooney, Beyonce, Sting, Oprah, Athletes, Conan, Jay, and the rest of them are multi multi millionaires. I love it how all of these elitist want to flaunt their talents and fame to guilt us who quietly write checks directly to the charities involved so they can feel better about themselves as they dine on caviar and wagu beef tar tar at the next cocktail party. Shut up…Give a nickel of your money which would be about a mil or two and tell your elite friends to do the same. Americans are some of the most generous people on the planet. We give without being asked by celebrities. They need to do so without their always much needed fan fair and need to be admired more than the rest of us..
January 14th, 2010 at 8:30 am
seriously who cares? why not have one for homeless vets, or raise money for me. At least that could help someone.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:34 am
why not have a telethon for all the homeless people we have HERE george? the people of america that lost their jobs. HELP IS FIRST GEORGE. what about all the vets that come home to nothing, or the families who lost loved ones fighting for us. help this country first — THEN help others if we can.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:41 am
Dont send money to Haiti. It is the most corrupt country in the hemisphere. People will never see it.. Send clothes, foodstuffs only.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:43 am
To Sally from Chicago: Many Americans are having a hard time at the moment, but Haiti is having it much worse. You really can’t say this Telethon will not be successful. People have compassion and seem to pull together in tragedy. Therefore, this telethon WILL be successful! It will be successful, because ANYTHING given, will go a long way in Haiti. I myself am “tapped out” but still gave. Maybe if stop being so negative, your situation might change.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:46 am
I think it should be a Hollywood-a-thon. Those liberal Commies out there have tons of money, they each just need to bring in a pile and this bill would be paid. I made my donation to the only charitable iinstitution that I trust, the only outfit that was at my induction in the militaty and weas there when I got out. The Salvation Army is the only Charity on earth who has sidestepped corruption. Obama and the Hollywood LEFT stay away.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Clooney is an idiot and is guaranteeing I will dontate elsewhere. He is a self-loving blow-hard, and please realize that the majority of the funds raised will get caught up in the bureaucracy of MTV. Go to Wyclef Jean’s site http://www.yele.org and donate to real Hatians who will get 95% of what you send, not the George Clooney “look at me the actor who helps out world causes”/laguna beach/mtv worthless bags of trash. God bless Haiti
January 14th, 2010 at 8:48 am
Im concerned about where my donations go. Sure i want to contribute but if I give money to the red cross how do I know its not paying the CEOs 200k+ salary and that fancy building they have in midtown manhattan.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:51 am
I hope George Clooney makes it crystal clear that no celebrity expenses for travel, food, limos, etc., will be paid by the good people of America. ALL money goes for Haitian relief.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:57 am
I am proud of the country I live in and of it’s people. “Tapped Out” or not, we find ways to help others. Prayers DO work!
January 14th, 2010 at 9:02 am
Anyone who gives money to Haiti is a moron. Unless they give knowing 90% will never reach the people, will never help, will be pilfered by the government and those in power. The telethon is joke. Clooney is a joke. Publish that.
January 14th, 2010 at 9:24 am
The question must be asked. Will all the folks working and starring be compensated? Remember the Hollywood set did a BIG Fundraiser for 9/11 vicims. Once they paid for all appearances, guess what went to the families? Nothing. Come on George and everyone else, volunteer for free. If not, many Americans (you know the little people) will not be giving a penny in your cause.
The Red Cross still gets the highest % of donations out to the need.
January 14th, 2010 at 9:25 am
Wondering why the hollywood elite need to do a telethon. I’m sure they have plenty of $$ between them. The president they voted for has chewed up our economy, let them pay for Haiti.
January 14th, 2010 at 9:49 am
I’ll be making an appearance next Friday along with Taylor Swift. She is my substitute because Mike Myers can’t make it.
Barack Obama doesn’t care about white people!
January 14th, 2010 at 10:02 am
Come on! A telethon for Haiti, were was the telethon for American Samoa, a U. S. Territory!! We never help or protect our own.
January 14th, 2010 at 10:03 am
Who cares what that liberal thinks or does?
January 14th, 2010 at 10:10 am
I’d much rather see George gather up gobs of money from his rich Hollywood and Democrat friends than to come on the air and guilt us peasants into more donations. How much is he sending?
January 14th, 2010 at 10:22 am
Georgie won’t get a dime from me.
January 14th, 2010 at 10:25 am
Just looking at the list of names above is more than enough way overpaid (actor’s?)to fill there op’s money dream. That’s the ticket! They can watch and glad hand themselves.
January 14th, 2010 at 10:33 am
What ever happened to the money from the last telethon he held? A year later, they could not report where the money went…
January 14th, 2010 at 10:37 am
George how about a telethon for the poor in your own country. This is such phoney b.s.,Haiti was a mess before this disaster and no one helped them.Maybe U should just get all your hollywood friends collect a million from each, send it and then throw a party for you and your friends.Maybe your buddy Obama can get some stimulus money and send that too….ENOUGH WITH THE TELETHONS!!!!
January 14th, 2010 at 10:41 am
Great. Another self-congratulatory noise fest of suckworthy music by narcissists and their sycophantic followers. Why don’t celebrities just shut up, roll their sleeves up and quietly DO something when cameras aren’t rolling. Just give the money and quit with the friggin’ telethons already.
January 14th, 2010 at 10:43 am
Well that’s enough reason for me not to watch or donate a dime!!!
January 14th, 2010 at 10:47 am
I admire Mr Clooney’s intention, but the piece meal help that charities provide do not solve poverty and inequality. See a plan that will take us in the correct direction and will solve the problems of survival. The Worldwide United Foundation (http://wwunited.org)
January 14th, 2010 at 10:54 am
Het George, why not have Cuba or Venezuela or Russia pick up the tab? Oh that’s right, the little Socialist paradises you constantly praise can barely keep their own citizens alive. Make sure Barry apologizes to Haiti after we help them.
January 14th, 2010 at 11:00 am
We should also be talking about the disaster this has been for animals, like my fellow dogs. Many have been killed, are homeless and lost. Master and the White House care about this, too. Here’s what I’ve observed:

You know, instead of asking us for money (which we don’t have because of the man I’m sure Clooney helped get elected), why doesn’t George donate HIS money. He’s the one who gets paid obscene amounts of money to role play.
January 14th, 2010 at 11:58 am
While all of Commiewoods hot-shots were at this bash, busy pimping their latest junk, they found time to ask the American people, who they have a great disdain for, to cough up some cash. What about all their Billions? Or is their personal money saved for only the most Leftist causes.
January 14th, 2010 at 11:59 am
Clooney, please just go away!!!
January 14th, 2010 at 12:05 pm
Bradd and Angelina donated a million yesterday, so they shouldn’t need to be at the telethon.
January 14th, 2010 at 12:12 pm
Only a fool would give money to these clowns.
January 14th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
As much as I dislike George Clooney’s politics I have to say that he does give generously to a lot of charities. Also, it is a documented FACT that the artists and actors DONATED their time to George Clooney’s past telethons. Even the networks donated by doing these commercial free. I firmly believe that not one penny should go outside the US while we have children going to bed hungry at night. At the end of the day however, if people would rather give to foreign charities than here at home, it’s their business and their money.
January 14th, 2010 at 12:16 pm
Really? Can’t these Fascist Hollywood (Do as I say, not as I do) types just do something without making a PR campaign out of it for themselves? George you don’t need to ask the American people to give $ out, we do it already – no one gives a god damned about you, you Hollywood elitist dolt.
January 14th, 2010 at 12:24 pm
Where the hell was this moron when the people of Iowa and the rest of the midwest suffered such devastation when the floods hit a few years ago?????????????????????????????? This is just another grandstanding B-S play by a hollywood elitist moron.
God they make me sick!!!!!!!! Anything to get “adored” by his many fans. Puke!!
January 14th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
I’m with the guy who says to have a telethon for the Americans who are unemployed! Those Americans who are working still are generous ,to a fault. Look at New Orleans and the corruption after Hurricane Katherina. Whatever happened to a billion dollars that was donated? No one cared enough to even investigate…they were too busy mocking GWBush to really concern themselves.Same thing with this Clooney. Let him go and shovel some debris away, that would help the Haitians more then his telethon.
January 14th, 2010 at 12:39 pm
OMG people are you listening to yourselves? He leads teams to Africa every year. Brad and Angelina donated ONE MILLION DOLLARS to aid efforts. What have you done lately…its just five dollars to text!! I live in city where every one in five people lost a loved on to this. Get over yourselves.

It’s this simple…George & friends not only don’t have any idea what the average American is dealing with currently, but simply they don’t care. They are too busy wondering if Brad will leave Angelina for his ex-wife, Jennifer Anniston, or where the next big booze-drug bash will be in L.A. Except for a few, they are lost souls. Lets give life rafts for the few & maybe the rest of them will sink in the next big quake in CA.!!!

Tim, news flash. American Conservatives donate to charity on average more than 5 times that of Liberals. Your response no doubt will be, “That’s because they have the money!” Wrong again. (Are you ever right?) Democrats make up a higher percentage of millionaires and billionaires in the U.S.
So who’s the ‘evil’ ones? (Tip: drop the highly subjective judgmental rhetoric. It influences no one and makes you look ignorant.)
These are facts. Look them up. Try knowledge, it works.
By the way, how much did you give to charity this year?

Funny thing is, is that Last time Hollywood Took on a Telethon there was a huge problem with where the money went..As i do recall. Hollywood has the most overpaid workers in the USA..Should take their earnings from ONE movie and donate it.. Instead they are calling on the Public to help, when some families cant even make ends meat.
It’s fine to help and donate if you can afford to do so..however, It’s probably not the best of times for some americans to Give $$$$ ..So hollywood should pick up the slack..since they have the constant Cameras on them. And they can afford it ..better then anyone.

What a crock! If all the tax cheating hollywood elites would quit taking every deduction THEIR well paid accountants can find, we’d be outta debt in no time! How about a telethon to pay down the deficit or house homeless Vets, or refab homes for the elderly, or feed kids whose sorry parents don’t feed them! LET the “stars” take up a good old fashion Southern Baptist love offering of THEIR OWN $$$ and send it over. Don’t ask us for a penny to go outside of the US!

I am ashamed at you people. 50,000 people in Haiti died as a result of this earthquake, and most posters just whine and complaint about their problems. Newsflash, if you have the internet to post comments, you are doing better off than the 50,000 DEAD. And stop wasting your time posting comments and go look for a job if you have it so bad!

I would really question where the money is going to end up. All those celebrity liberals support Obama and I wouldn’t be suprised if the money ended up going to support him! I don’t trust anyone in Obama’s administration or any of these idiot celebrities. You are right, they should be giving their millions away. That is after all what they believe in. Let’s put your money where your mouth is. Leave all of us alone, we are just trying to keep our kids fed and our houses from being taken away! However, I will gladly donate to the red cross.

Wow, the amount of negative reaction to this is stunning. It proves how people just cannot think outside of themselves. Maybe this is why we haven’t ever been able to pass health care reform, and why the current legislation is being demonized.
I realize that people here in the U.S. are struggling (I am too). But, for MOST of us, compared to what is going on in Haiti,it’s NOTHING. You can give $5, and that adds up! Charities have a tremendous way of using small amounts of money and getting a bang for the buck.
With all of our problems, we are still blessed in this country to have an infrastructure, and to have access to clean water, electricity, and the basics of life, which were in short supply in Haiti even before this earthquake struck.
It’s about putting out good karma and caring for your fellow human being, no matter what your own circumstances. As I said, $5, even $1.00 would be a good thing if that’s all one could give..and that matters more in the tough times. Don’t think God isn’t watching.
And one more thing..how do you know that Clooney, and other wealthy people haven’t given, and given hugely?

It’s this simple…George & friends not only don’t have any idea what the average American is dealing with currently, but simply they don’t care. They are too busy wondering if Brad will leave Angelina for his ex-wife, Jennifer Anniston, or where the next big booze-drug bash will be in L.A. Except for a few, they are lost souls. Lets give life rafts for the few & maybe the rest of them will sink in the next big quake in CA.!!!
________________________
What? You’re saying that George & friends are busy with tabloids and their b u l l s h i t stories about Jolie, Pitt and his Aniston. LMAO
Even if George & friends didn’t knew Pitt and Jolie and what the tabloids are about, i chose to to believe that after 5 years and 6 kids of stories about how Pitt’s going back to his ex, they’re smart enough to realized that tabloids are b u l l s h i t.
But probably like most Americans George & friends don’t even read tabloids.

ever notice that most of his movies BOMB? Why does he get so much love from the award shows? He sucks and he always plays Dr doug ross in every movie. I like what Jolie did… she donated a million and probably more. she didn’t ask for donations… she gave money herself. I didn’t include Brad Pitt because I doubt his sincerity. Angelina has been giving huge amounts for almost a freaking decade and Pitt only when he got with Jolie. ..he probably doesn’t even know what happened in Haiti.

To the people who have generously given, thank you.
To all the people whining “What about our poor?” First, you likely didn’t give a damn about the poor in America before this event so stop trying to use them in your argument now. Second, your poor is NOTHING compared to what the people of Haiti are going through. The majority of you complaining about your poverty likely have cell phones, cell phone plans, cable TV, digital cable TV, satellite, iPhones, ipods, Nike sneakers and an array of other needless goods that are not contingent to your survival. If you own a computer, as well as internet access that allows you to post on this message board, your obviously not as broke as you’d like to believe. I know people in Haiti who, EVERY DAY, have to walk to the river a mile from their home simply to get water. The “poor’ in America you speak of likely just go to their sinks or the gas station down the street.
As for the comment, “We’ve out a lot into Haiti and it’s done no good…” Your government has also supported dictatorships in Haiti and turned a blind eye to the ongoing corruption so long as it was beneficial to them, so you owe a lot more to Haiti than what they’re getting now.
What Haiti really represents to most on here is that fact that, while they would like to complain and moan about their privileged lives, there are people who have it worse. This opposition to sending aid and complaints about celebrity fundraisers have nothing to do with the poor in America being slighted. It has everything to do with privileged people LIKING to feel sorry for themselves, lamenting about their poverty, but then feeling then THREATENED when actual poverty is shoved in their face. You live in the richest country in the entire world. To compare yourselves to those who can’t even drink clean water on a daily basis is nothing short of narcissism.

January 15th, 2010 at 8:59 am
My fellow Americans, you are disgusting. You blather on about joblessness, reduced bank accounts, etc.. Are you searching for your children in piles of rubble? Have you, along with every member of your community, lost every single thing that ever meant anything to you? Put things in perspective, people. Bitch, moan and personalize less. Contribute more. If every person in the US gave $1 to relief for the Haitian people, it would be a hell of a start. You and I have no idea what Clooney gave to this cause – because he doesn’t give a shit who knows it. I’m sure he was more than generous, which history indicates. He just doesn’t need an article in People magazine to prove it.

Wow! Yo guys are insane! Siobhan & Joann, and one or two others are the only ones who don’t seem to have their heads shoved where the sun does not shine! The rest of you appear to be a bunch of egocentric, whining jerks! I truly thought the people of America had more sense & compassion to them! Once again, it almost makes me embarrassed that I am even related to some Americans.
And btw… If you would all pull your heads out of the aforesaid orifices, you might be able to see that Mr. Obama is actually the the best opportunity you have had in a long time! Instead you just fight him every step of the way and then blame him for not being successful at what he sets out to do, when it was people like you that sabotaged his efforts in the first place!! You don’t know a good thing until you lose it. I pity you.
…and to those of you who keep asking how much Mr. Clooney has donated, mind your own business! It was probably a lot more than you could even imagine donating but it is not truly a charitable donation if you have to trumpet it from the rooftops! Anyone read the Bible? Anyone heard the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector? “Luke Chapter 18 Verses 9-14″ I am not a terribly religious person, but even I agree with the gist of this passage. The arrogance needed to assume that you have a right to demand to know what good deeds others are doing is appalling! Just reach into your own heart and do what you know you should and leave it at that. You will receive the reward you deserve when you deserve it and so will everyone else. No need to compare notes on who is holier or more charitable than thou!
January 15th, 2010 at 12:54 pm
Hey Mr. Wonderful, A.K.A. Clooney. Here’s a novel idea: If you’re really interested in collecting donations to help people out of your pure concern for those in need, how about just quietly gathering the donations from all those people mentioned in this article and sending it to them – period. People in this country who can afford to help, know how to do it; they don’t need a bunch of rich celebrities showing everyone how concerned they are. In case you didn’t see, millions of dollars have been donated already along with hundreds or thousands of volunteers, flying in supplies and medical assistance —- Unbelievably, all without the help of George Clooney or Sting or Oprah or any major celebrity. Incredible isn’t it?
January 15th, 2010 at 1:49 pm

Interesting comments… what’s interesting about them, is that 90% of you people are BLATHERING IDIOTS! Let’s start with your harangues on Clooney. You see, HE is actually DOING SOMETHING while YOU are just spewing bile! HE is ORGANIZING a charity action, while NOT ONE OF YOU is organizing ANYTHING.
Your incessant calls that he and his actor friends should pay for the mess is as insipid as you thinking he is asking any one of you to pay for anything. The man is opening the doors for help to flow to people that need it.
Are YOU doing a GOD DAMNED THING besides belly-aching?
I commend the man for taking action.
Your side-swiping and belly-aching is what is scornful here; NOT the efforts of those people (celebs, production workers, grips, laborers, cameramen, etc.) who will mostly contribute their time and skills to bring attention to the desperate plight of the Haitian people.
If you begrudge a movie star his or her income, then don’t go to the movies. I don’t see anyone complaining here about the salaries of CEOs at the big banks or health care companies (who make WAY more than a Clooney or Sting, btw.) Also, people like Clooney have donated more money that you will ever make in a lifetime. So who is the chest thumping loser now, people. (Clue: not him…)
You are an interesting demographic – reverse elitists.
Maybe you should just rely on yourselves next time your white-trash trailer gets demolished in a hurricane. Or perhaps you could just ‘blog’ your way out of it.
You are obviously too stupid to realize how stupid you are. Not to mention, an embarrassment to mankind.

I am thrilled to see George step up. I would be more thrilled to see how his money was used to help those in extreme needs. Ah, document George! document. Cause just saying it goi9ng to a good cause and actually seeing it work, makes a HUGE difference on if poeple will continue to support this type of thing. And it would also be nice of you get to regular folk, those of us living here wanting to help in more ways, working with you on the telethon. Get volunteers out there George to bring this alive. It is called grassroots baby! worked for Obama in his campaign and can work for you and all your high priced friends in entertainment.
The bottom line George, I apprecaite your efforts, but would appreciate them more if I could actually see, be close to the cause. Your connections and networking are great, but makes normal folk, obvious by many of these posts feel less.
And agree with many of the posters who say stop complaining. I doubt any of you posting have expereinced or lived in extreme conditions, much less a natural disaster were death is pretty eminenet. So step up to your own plate and take on any cause that bothers you. If you are indeed homeless right now, then help out local/state/national goverment realize the stress you are under by contacting them. Then provide a solution…….you can’t change much by staqnding by and complaining.

George Clooney is using the power of hollywood to help raise money.. he’s got several tv stations helping, and numerous stars.. he’s raising money to help. time is money.. who cares how much he gives himself? the fact that he’s trying to help is enough. as for people saying no one will give? I’m sure you all have a quarter, a dime or a nickel, go out into the streets, ask the neighbors to all put those together and make a $10 donation. (just an idea)
I’m trying to help to.. im promoting the show on my entertainment blog.. if we all pitch in. even if we have no money, why not send over some clothes that we no longer use? Has anyone thought about organizing that?

Sadly, these kind of telethons are largely self serving for the artists and stars involved and a large portion of the money raised will never get to the poor people that are supposed to get it. It will be mostly entertainment and promotion of the famous sorry to say. I would much rather give my money to a organization like “Healing Haiti” or “Feed My Starving Childern” where nearly all of the procedes go directly to the cause. My heart goes out to the people of Haiti.May God give them the strength to get through this horrable time.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:48 am
A lot of self serving publicity for the most part. Little, if any, of the proceeds will ever get to the poor people of Haiti. It most likely will serve as a platform to promote the latest CD and or movie under the guise that some of these people actually care. Even if some of them do, the shameless promoters will grab most of the money. I would rather give to an organization that already does work in Haiti and 100% of the donations are given to the cause. Like http://www.healinghaiti.org/. But we all have the right to give our money to whoever we want. I`m just saying.

Also, didn’t Obama just pledge $100 million of our tax money to go to Haiti.

Wow, wow ! It breaks my heart to read all the resentment and selfishness that exists out there. They don’t realize that “As man thinkith within his heart, so is he” and “As a man gives, so shall he receive.” With your attitude, what little you have will be taken away. Change your attitude, you’ll change your life. Give thanks for everything in your life every day of your life and you will be blessed . What have you got to lose!
