We told you back on October 21st, that Jennifer Hudson was going to play Winnie Mandela.
This morning came the press release, only a month late. It’s ok! The Oscar-winner will be directed by Darrell Roodt in an indie production. More casting will be announced shortly…
…Members of Aerosmith are now giving joint interviews stating the obvious: they’re sick to death of lead singer Steven Tyler’s behavior. His surprise appearance at a solo Joe Perry show this month didn’t win him any friends. Perry says Tyler walked in, took over his stage, sang, and left. They still haven’t spoken…
…’The Twilight Saga: New Moon” will break all kinds of records this weekend, and bring in millions of teenage girls. It’s really a terrible movie, though, just picks up where the first one ended with no explanation. It reminded me of a Saturday afternoon adventure film. If you’d never seen episode 1 you’d have no idea what was going on. It also looks as cheap as “Mamma Mia,” and that’s saying something. Filmmakers skipped ‘depth of field’ and concentrated on bad dialogue. The whole thing had less appeal than a “Gidget” movie. Rob Pattinson, the star, is a poor man’s Luke Perry. Yikes…
…Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story” got some of the best reviews ever for Moore. But it tanked at the boxoffice and now it’s been eliminated from Oscar competition. What went wrong? One word: Marketing. One more word: hubris. Moore was paid upwards of $25 million for this one. That left the distributor out of funds for anything. It’s too bad. Considering the state of the economy, Moore’s film might be of interest to a lot of people. But the commercials showing him clowning around on Wall Street with “crime scene” tape didn’t help. This was a serious film. It wasn’t treated that way…

Roger Moore wasn’t nom’d because its the same-o same-o…it’s the same stuff he was doing when he had his TV show. Maybe he belongs back on TV?
$25Mil – yikEs!

Maybe “Capitalism” tanked because nobody wanted to hear Michael Moore complain about the economic system that’s made him a millionaire. Hypocrite!

I look forward to seeing Jennifer Hudson portraying Winnie Mandela. Another Oscar?

Roger, I know you need to get your subtle pro-Weinstein message across (i.e., Overture doesn’t know how to market Michael Moore, if only he’d stayed with TWC), but it’s pretty much agreed upon that CAPITALISM is his weakest doc.
Metacritic scores for his last 4 films:
CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY: 61
SICKO: 74
FAHRENHEIT 9/11: 67
BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE: 72
Nice try though.

The only problem with New Moon is that Chris Weitz directed it in such a ham-fisted fashion. He just didn’t get it. Like you.

Sally, it cannot be nom’d because it simply wasn’t eligible. It was released on October 2nd, one month too late for eligibility.

So the anti-capitalism movie failed to make money? Doesn’t that make it a success? Particularly if it drives the capitalist distributor out of business.
The problem with this movie is that M. Moore isn’t a thinker, he’s a clown. When he’s throwing pies at easy targets, like Bush or NRA members, his like-”minded” acolytes show up to howl and nod. When he decides he’s qualified to expound on economics, they don’t. And just as well, since his brilliant ideas include “replacing capitalism with democracy.” Does he even know the difference between a financial system and an electoral structure? That’s like suggesting replacing wood screws with donuts, which he’d probably also be in favor of. This is that rare movie that can make stupid people even stupider, just by virtue of watching it (not rare for Moore, of course, all his films do that).
To quote A. Whitney Brown on the fall of the USSR: “Whoever would’ve thought that the fatal flaw of communism is that there just isn’t any money in it?”
