I don’t know what was better last night: seeing Bono join Wyclef Jean on Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” or Ethel Kennedy boogie with Wyclef on stage to an extended version of “Guantanamera.” Each was kind of outta sight.
Even weirder: all this took place in front of right wing antagonist Bill O’Reilly, who seemed be betraying his public persona by digging the whole deal. He bought a whole table — eight seats — at the Chelsea Piers dinner for the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation Ripple of Hope Award. That’s right, RFK, one of the most famous liberal Democrats in history, a man who would be appalled by O’Reilly’s nightly shredding of Barack Obama and his policies.
Maybe O’Reilly wants to switch places with Lou Dobbs and go to CNN!
The dinner honored both Bono and Wyclef Jean of the Fugees for their humanitarian efforts around the world. But the room was full of the kinds of people O’Reilly eviscerates over and over on his radio and TV shows. Dinner guests waited to see if the combative host would cross paths with Alec Baldwin, but the latter was a no show. He may have been stuck shooting “30 Rock.” But actors Matthew Modine and Gloria Reuben showed up and helped out with a portion of the show. Peter Gallagher was emcee for the evening. Charles Grodin was in attendance, too. So was Harry Belafonte, the anti-thesis of O’Reilly. Weird!
The night’s speakers — musicians! — were eloquent. Bono, who has the Irish blarney and a gift for extemporaneous gab — told the wealthy crowd at Chelsea Piers how he — as a Dubliner — idolized the Kennedy family. “They’re our royal family,” he said, a rebuke to Britain’s royals.
Wyclef, who was honored for his massive humantarian efforts in Haiti and Africa, responded how he’s idolized Bono and U2 as a kid. He talked about growing up in Haiti until the age of 10 with nothing, and how he and his family fantasized about coming to America. He said sometimes he and his brother tried killing birds in Haiti with slingshots to get dinner. Then he did some clever free-style raps supporting Obama and civil rights. O’Reilly must have been popping the Mylanta over at his table!
During a pause in Wyclef’s poignant speech, Unik Ernest, the Haitian fundraiser and famous event organizer, shouted something in jest, in Haitian, startling the corporate audience of donors. Wyclef got a kick out of it. What did he say? I asked Unik: “I said, Stop your crying! And let’s have some music!”
Bono, by the way, brought a table of his Red supporters (www.joinred.com), but he was a little jealous that Wyclef’s Yele (www.yele.org) table was rowdier.
By the way, Wyclef — the underrated genius musician of hip hop — will release his new album next April. He’s still on Sony/Columbia, although the label may not be aware of it. They’ve never done much for him. If you’re new to the Wyclef world, go on amazon.com’s MP3 Music downloads, and make an album for yourself of “If I Was President” — which will give O’Reilly quite a headache, “911,” “Gone ’til November,” “Two Wrongs (Don’t Make a Right),” “Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill),” “Take Me As I Am,” “Heaven’s in New York,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and of course,”Hips Don’t Lie” (with Shakira). That’s an excellent starter package!

Personally, I think that as a former Attorney General, Robert Kennedy would be more appalled by Barack Obama’s daily shredding of the Constitution.

This article is a ridiculous hit piece. I’m not a huge Bill Oreilly fan, but Oreilly has said on numerous occasions how much he admired Robert Kennedy and thought he could have been one of our greatest presidents. Iv’e just about had it with Friedman and his obvious blind hatred of ANYTHING Fox/Murdoch related. Since Friedman was let go by Fox several months ago over the “Wolverine” movie downloading episode(which I thought was unfair)He’s been carrying one HUGE chip on his shoulder.I really enjoyed Friedman’s old “Fox 411″ column as well as his tv appearances(he appeared on Oreilly on several occasions and the two seemed to have gotten along well).Roger, PLEASE let it die already!

Roger:
You could have told a great story without forcing the O’Reilly angle on us.
Using your weird logic, I guess Bono & Wyclef support RFK’s work as Joseph McCarthy’s right hand man in addition too his unconstitutional authorization of the wiretapping of Martin Luther King.
Its an easy and stupid guilt by association game you play, Roger.

Wow, Roger takes a dig at a Fox News personality. How shocking…
As for Wyclef, I think it’s a stretch to call him a genius. His early successes were largely built on sampled hooks and glorified covers. Even the Shakira song recycles the same horn sample he previously used for Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. He’s the kind of hip-hop artist square middle-aged guys love, vapidly political and non-threatening. He’s Will Smith with a bit more critical acclaim. By the way, O’Reilly would laugh at “If I Was President.” It’s ridiculous lyrics about how he’d be elected on a Friday (America does that on Tuesday) and assassinated for being black on Saturday (proven asinine this year) are what would qualify for deep political thought for a C-student in high school.

Glad to hear about this fundraiser and how it will benefit Haiti. I’ve spent time in that country doing humanitarian work and it’s very bleak there. Great job, Wyclef!
I’m headed to Africa in Feb and hope to see some of the impact tnat has been made their by Bono, Wyclef and others.

As you are well aware, Mr. O’Reilly is a registered Independent. Just because he is conservative, does not mean he’s a Republican and it also does not mean he shouldn’t enjoy art or music with people who are more liberal thinking. It’s funny how you Democrats always like to point fingers and Republican intolerance, when clearly you are the most intolerant of all.

Roger, maybe you should sell off all of the assets you obtained while working for Fox and donate them to the foundation.

Are only liberals allowed to like music? Another Fox dig in a week. This is getting old fast.

I know that Bono was on O’Reilly’s show some time back and O’Reilly was very complimentary about Bono’s humanitarian work for Africa.
What amazes me is that Ann Coulter is a big Grateful Dead fan; talk about opposites!

Have you ever watched O’Reilly? I’ve never seen any “shredding of Obama” on his show. Glenn Beck maybe.
November 21st, 2009 at 6:47 am
one does not even need to be a regular viewer of Oreilly to know that he bends over backwards to not jump on the bash-obama train. in fact, often times, he will welcome 2 pro obama views to make for a multi-opinion dialogue. truly, roger, you are outing yourself as ignorant.

I agree with Allan. I watch O’Reilly nearly every night. I think he secretly voted for Obama …either way hats off to all of those who attended the charity event and especially to those who gave time and money to the cause.

there’s no such thing as a “Haitian” language. Haitians speak Kreyole, French, or both. So Roger, Unik probably shouted something to Wyclef in Kreyole. But nice that you’re giving props to a couple of cool Haitians.
