James Franco, one of our hottest and most interesting young actors, joins ABC soap “General Hospital” in November for a short run.
Why? What? Franco won raves for his performance in “Milk,” awards for playing James Dean, made big bucks from “Spider-Man,” and has several big films on his release schedule.
The world is puzzling over this odd choice. One thing: he and one of the “GH” actors share a manager. But that’s not enough to push Franco onto a show that oddly mixes doctors and nurses with a low-rent “Godfather” storyline. So what gives?
Franco gives minimal explanation. He tells me, only: “It’s performance art.”
That’s it. He can’t even say why he’s chosen this soap over another. But Franco marches to a different drummer. He’s spent the last few years as a part-time academic and would be writer. He’s got a contract with Scribner’s for a book of stories. He’s in a graduate creative writing program at NYU and Columbia University. Prior to that, while he was making “Spider-Man,” he was also getting his B.A. from UCLA.
The message: he can do anything he wants. In this last year he’s also made experimental films shown at the Museum of Modern Art. James Franco, whose mother is a children’s book author and family operates a prestigious art gallery, is not going to be pigeonholed.
And, anyway, he follows in the footsteps of Elizabeth Taylor, who once appeared on “General Hospital.” Rosie O’Donnell and Carol Burnett each have made cameros on “All My Children.” Maybe Franco’s shot will inspire other name stars to drop in on soaps.
If more of the famous soap alumnus returned to their shows for a week–how about Julianne Moore to “As the World Turns” or Josh Duhamel to “All My Children”– it might save the genre from extinction.

Tobey Maguire (Spiderman) appeared in a 1979 episode of General Hospital (age 4) and then again in 1992, when he played a character that was bullying Robin Scorpio in high school. James Franco and Tobey Maguire now share a link to that show.

Roger, it’s a paycheck. He’s an actor. And as Robert Deniro (?) once stated, if you’re an actor and acting is your craft, “you act.” I think he’s the one.

This is fantastic. I’ve always been a fan of Franco, so hearing him only respond with ‘it’s performance art,’ puts a smile on my face, as I do agree, and it makes me wonder what he has up his sleeve. It also gives me this odd excitement to see him acting on General Hospital. It makes me wonder where he’s at in his career, as many actors hit that area of their career where they’re looking to experiment. They love acting, it’s what they do it’s not always about the cash. Sometimes it’s about the experience.
I have watched General Hospital, I remember it’s past, and I can’t lie there has been some good performances on that show and some great story writing, even good camera shots. I’m not one to toss General Hospital in with the other soaps either, some just do not live up to par. I am not surprised Franco chose this soap.
I am stoked and waiting in anticipation to see him share screen time with emmy winner Steve Burton who is a fantastic actor. And a few others who are also gifted actors and actresses within the show. However, Burton is not as seen as others due to his full time schedule on GH, you don’t see him other things. Which I’m sure is a personal choice for his lifestyle. But he’s done really well on the show.
I think this will be great for soap fans, as well as Franco fans. It should be something wonderful. An art of acting we may never forget…hmm…

Rosie O’Donnell and Carol Burnett made “cameros”. Who knew?

As a big fan of Franco’s work (he’s one of the best actors of our generation) I was a bit thrown off by his choice. But being that he isn’t hurtin for money, or attention, or lack of work (he’s filmed like 4 films this year already), this choice must be based on pure love for acting.

There is no way in a million years that James is doing this for the “paycheck”.
Especially considering the amount of feature film scripts he gets sent to him daily.
I kinda appreciate him doing it for no other reason than trying a soap opera arc for a few episodes.

Nothing to do with a paycheck. He just finished shooting EAT PRAY LOVE opposite Julia Roberts and is currently reportedly making millions shooting YOUR HIGHNESS with PINEAPPLE EXPRESS alum Danny McBride and director David Gordon Green. Soaps pay very little. He’s an artist, and like most painters don’t explain their artwork, Franco, I believe, as an actor, wants to experience all facets of the the actors world. Just my opinion.

I can’t think James Franco is worried about a paycheck. I’d like to imagine he’s doing this to support the soap opera as a genre.
Isn’t it funny how it’s hard to see the words ‘performance art’ these days without thinking of it as a crack at Joaquin Phoenix?

I think it’s great that James Franco has come to Daytime. It’s admorable, to say the least. These soaps are in trouble, and I know most people think they’re silly, but to some of us, they are our lives. Please don’t reply saying “You know they’re not real, right”. Duh! It’s entertainment, and it’s good. I find tons of humor in soaps and it’s amazing to grow old with these characters. Franco is an exciting new character, and I hope to see him spice up daytime! I appreciate his guest appearance and hope it helps daytime! Thank you James Franco!!!
