Barbra Streisand, perhaps the greatest performer of her generation, made history last night for her fans as she returned to her Greenwich Village roots after almost 50 years.
As a promotional effort for her latest album, “Love is the Answer,” the eternally youthful looking Streisand brought a four-piece jazz band into the Village Vanguard, a downstairs club in the West Village where she got her start almost five decades ago. Among the guests were fans who’d won a lottery for the available 78 seats.
But the other fans were also pretty remarkable: former president Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with daughter Chelsea and her fiancee, actor James Brolin (Streisand’s husband), Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman, Donna Karan, famed theater actress Phyllis Newman who is also the widow of Adolph Green, lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman, mogul Barry Diller (solo — wife Diane von Furstenberg was away, he told me), the New York Times’s Frank Rich and Alex Witchel, Deborah Lee Furness aka Mrs. Hugh Jackman, Columbia Records chief Rob Stringer, and longtime Hollywood manager Sandy Gallin.
The brilliant record producer Tommy LiPuma, who made “Love is the Answer” with Streisand and Diana Krall, was also there.
Of course, not everyone could fit into the Village Vanguard, so Sony Music, the parent of Columbia Records, arranged for a closed-circuit feed to the Louis XVI suite at the Waldorf Astoria. That’s where yours truly watched the show on large TV screens, along with about 50 more of Streisand’s friends and family including Joy Behar of “The View,” another longtime Streisand associate and music exec Charles Koppelman (now CEO of Martha Stewart’s company), and even the rabbi who’s head of the Conservative Jewish movement in Israel!
Streisand started the hour-long show, which can be seen on AOL Broadband this evening, introduced by her devoted manager of 48 years, Marty Ehrlichman. She also introduced Jimmy Cobb, the legendary (now 80 year old) jazz drummer who played her early albums (and was Miles Davis’s drummer), as well as the waiter who gave her career tips all those years ago.
From our vantage point in the Waldorf, Streisand looked like “buttah” in the most intimate setting she’s performed in for years. Maybe because of that, she was a little too relaxed. Speaking off the cuff, Streisand introduced over a dozen songs with many reminiscences. Some of them were telling: “When I sing songs like ‘People’ over and over, I get a little bored,” she admitted. So “People,” one of her signature numbers, was not in the show.
Instead she sang “My Funny Valentine” at the suggestion of a friend, after not singing it for years. She included Jacques Brel’s “If You Go Away” including the anecdote of how and she and her husband (Elliot Gould, presumably) and another couple flew to Marseilles years ago to see Brel, only to have him not sing it himself. She performed her own hit, “Evergreen,” because she said it was President Clinton’s favorite. “I feel Virginia’s here, too,” she said, referring to the president’s late mother. “She was one of my surrogate mothers.”
Some of the other numbers included one by the Bergmans (”I’ve recorded 52 of their songs”), “Bewitched Bothered, and Bewildered,” “My Heart Belongs to Me,” “Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” “Gentle Rain,” “Spring Can Really Hang You Up,” “Make Someone Happy,” “Where Do You Start?” and then threw the room a big bone, as it were: the Bergmans’ (with Marvin Hamlisch), “The Way We Were.” On the screen, you could see Sarah Jessica Parker tear up, like half the room.
It was a night bathed in nostalgia, but it wasn’t always perfect. The first thing Streisand asked yours truly (of all things) after she and most of the guests transferred up to the Waldorf was: “Was I okay? Did my voice sound alright?” Yes, for real, she was verklempt. We told her she said, “People” was boring. “I did?” she exclaimed, “Oh my god!”
The answer is: she told the audience, “I haven’t sung since January.” She and the band only rehearsed for this gig for two days. If she were anyone else, Streisand would get an A plus. But with that little preparation, maybe we’ll say A minus. She missed some high notes. Sometimes, toward the end, you could a little hoarseness. She was not the usual Streisand the perfectionist. It’s incredibly ingratiating to find out she’s human, taking chances, and real. It didn’t quite bring her down to a mortal level, but made her accessible in a new way.
Now, if she “practices, practices, practices,” she knows what her next stop will be. “What about Carnegie Hall?” she asked us, in all seriousness.
She should try it!

September 28th, 2009 at 5:20 am
Good! Because hearing “People” is boring too!
September 28th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
It’s also boring to listen to! lol
September 28th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
This is one of those few people who cannot fail, no matter what. She is the female answer to Sinatra.
September 28th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
She needs to RETIRE! forever!
September 28th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Good grief! Streisand is boring. Didn’t she retire 20 years ago? She once had a nice voice, but that time is long past. Let’s all show some respect and let granny fade away gracefully.
September 28th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Singing “People” is boring?
What about hearing “People”?!!
September 28th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Of course it’s boring! It was boring 30 years ago! That’s a really old song and she’s been singing it for 4 decades. Why would we be surprised?
September 28th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Just as boring as us having to listen to her. “People” is the most sickening song ever written.
September 28th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Listening to Streisand these days os not only BORING, but more painful than waterboarding… Go now and join Cher grazing in the pasture.
September 28th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
I saw her on Oprah and loved every minute, heaven.
September 28th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
“Barbra Streisand, perhaps the greatest performer of her generation”!
Did you ever hear of Sinatra or Elvis?
September 28th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
listening to RAP (I left the “C” off the word) and the pop music of today to is similar to going to the dentist. Terribly painful. Talent is a thing of the past. One requires no talent to sell today’s music. The great artists such as Streisand, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Judy Garland actually have/had talent. Unlike the garbage produced today, they withstood the test of time. The crap today is gone tomorrow.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:07 pm
Barbra said singing “People” was boring, we all agree that listening to “People” is boring, but what wasn’t heard from the wings was James Brolin saying “Barbra is boring”. Barbra, however, finds Bill Clinton fascinating and vice-versa, so Hillary was there as sort of an electronic monitor ankle bracelet. And, dear Chelsea was there because the Clinton’s want her in politics a.s.a.p. so she gets as much exposure as they can get her. It’s always special to be at one of Barbra’s final concerts!
September 28th, 2009 at 8:10 pm
“People” is the most embarrassing song ever written. She’s been singing it — over and over and over — for past million years and now SHE’s bored? Sweetie, you’re not the only one. And as for all the folks tearing up as she sang, I think that speaks for itself. I love her to pieces, but she needs to stop.

September 28th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
DUH!
September 28th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Babs should hear it from our side of the stage. It’s even more boring to hear than it is to sing.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Cher is great leave her alone
September 28th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
She’s not much to look at and has the personality of an enlightened door knob…but she serves the revolution well. Thankfully she and her Hollywood friends are shallow and do think deeply, otherwise they might see me for who I really am.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
A true professional always places his/her fans first.
But not bored, boring Barbara.
She is well over the hill.
We don’t have to hear from her that she is bored,
it has been manifested in her demeanor right along.
No surprise.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
Babbs music to some is good stuff. But when did having talent mean the Artist was equally intelligent?
Just a hunch but I would venture a guess Babbs doesn’t think cashing the royalty checks for “People” is boring.
If she is so bored let her retire. The music industry won’t miss her, since talent is no longer a requirement to sell what they are calling music these days.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
Um, “you could a little hoarseness” Really? Maybe you started falling asleep at the end of the story and missed a word? And “God” has a capital letter, roger. Always.
Oh, and this woman’s been a bore for decades.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Finally – Something I can agree with BS on. Maybe now she’ll just shut the hell up.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
This is too bad andit does make me very sadt that The Barbara is bored of sining a particular song. We the audience have all had our collective experence that hjas hallmarked it in our hearts .
Like all things it is over now. The country and the perspective we’ve had. Now we’re going to be little soviets inside a bigger one.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Oh, no, the Drudgebots!!!
The “Singing ‘People’ is boring” line was 1 line out of a long article, but that was the line that Drudge quoted in the link on his web page. So the Drudgebots came here and only commented on that one line, and didn’t even read the article. That’s OK, because Drudge does their reading (and their thinking) for them.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
Yea some so called classics that fans demand are really just boring except for the nostalgia. Ill put Wish You Were Here in the same category, and Im one of the biggest floyd fans there is. Freebird too.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
People, people who eat people.
Are the hungriest people… in the world.
September 28th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Didn’t she say she would go away after that fiasco in her back yard 20 years ago?
September 28th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
point blank she lost it long ago.. but her ego was what kept her thinking she was it.. few can stand her and fewer want her near them…
September 28th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
To all those music aficionados who would never have the guts or the talent to perform on stage unless it was in their basement, please take a hike. Yes, the song is old but you will be one day as well. I don’t like Streisand the person but her voice, while maybe not quite what it was in her day, is something to be cherished. Like Sinatra she doesn’t just sing a song, she makes it hers and that is the sign of real talent. Most of you will never understand what it means to be a professional musician, or probably a professional anything for that matter. We don’t need you writing in just to give your inane comments. Nor does Streisand need your imprimatur, she’s doing just fine and will for some time to come. No go get a life
September 28th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
“Barbra Streisand, perhaps the greatest performer of her generation”…hahahahahaha
Streisand, you stink, go away. Take your pretentious entourage with you.
September 28th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
OH vomit and OH God, is there anything those media ho’s The Clintons won’t show up to? The ‘NO Dignity” President and his Man/wife will show up at a Mall opening if they were certain the press and photogs would be there. Take a hint from past presidents who got off the world stage and relaxed a bit. I don’t know who is worse, Arnold or you. Both have fears of being absent in the public eye. I wish Bill would just be honest and where a pin that says…..” I just wanna be loved”
September 28th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
zzzzzzzzzzzzz Huh, whaa, oh yea, boring, very boring
September 28th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
I would rather stare at the sun through a pair of binoculars than look at that commie-loving liberal.
September 28th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Streisand… second only to Sean Penn as the filthiest mind and most vulgar mouth in Hollywood. Of course she”s bored. The lyrics of her songs are totally foreign to the temper of her heart. She was indeed blessed with a voice, but it’s the rest of her that smells of decomposing garbage.
September 28th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
What an uncivilized crowd of grumpies this comment page attracts. This is living proof that there is no Intelligent Design and that evolution has worked better for some than others
September 29th, 2009 at 12:33 am
She should have ended her show by apologizing for being such a vociferous moron for so many years on issues for which she has no qualification to speak. The only thing more annoying than an idiot is an idiot with a bunch of drooling idiot fans. Shut your piehole, Babs. Nobody of any importance has ever cared what you think.
September 29th, 2009 at 12:39 am
Spell check/proof much?
September 29th, 2009 at 12:41 am
“perhaps the greatest performer of her generation”
Yeah, and perhaps you’re the greatest writer of your generation.
September 29th, 2009 at 12:48 am
Saw here in Vegas once. People actually fell asleep in the audiance. That pretty much says it all.
September 29th, 2009 at 1:05 am
Hello? Grammar? Respect for the Deity? Beuhller? “God” should begin with a capital “G,” even for Streisand. I wonder if it was a typographical mistake, or “liblock?”
September 29th, 2009 at 1:33 am
Why shouldn’t Barbra Streisand sing at 67. For God’s sake, she’s 67. Even she knows her voice is in decline. So was Sinatra’s, Garland’s, Holliday’s, Pavarotti’s, and so it goes with Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, and endless others. Does that mean the artistry needs to stop? Those of you who hate Barbra Streisand for this or that–your prejudice comes from things you’ve heard second hand about her. Mariah Carey may be an astounding singer but her voice has none of the real human beauty that Streisand’s has.
Ditto for Celine Dion who also has an incredible musical instrument at her disposal. I get no impression of Celine Dion’s coming from a wise, down-to-earth woman. Have you given yourself the chance to objectify and really listen to that voice? And did you know that had there been no Streisand there would have been none of the present group of female singers. Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, so many others have drawn inspiration from her. They have admitted so themselves.
She, Aretha Franklin, maybe a few others set the precedent for so many good singers as well as well as set the stage for endless copy-cats. Streisand is a truly unique artist. Listen to a song of hers you like.
Avoid the ones you don’t. Don’t respond to peer pressure. Feel, think for yourself. And if you are attacking her because she is a political liberal, well, what on earth does that have to do with her art of singing.
September 29th, 2009 at 1:48 am
This article is the only thing worse than Streisand talking.
It’s such a sycophantic hype fluff filler. Please be real: Streisand is a creature hyped beyond her worth for decades. It’s nice to know she is still going, but she is a cult figure grasping at her past.
“Eternally youthful looking”… really.
September 29th, 2009 at 3:09 am
Listening to Streisands political posturing is boring, Shutup and sing!
September 29th, 2009 at 3:44 am
The article gushes:
“Barbra Streisand, perhaps the greatest performer of her generation … the eternally youthful looking Streisand….”
I mean, where do these “writers” come from? A “C” student in High School could put together more plausible prose.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:00 am
The hypocrisy is amazing, someone that ascribes to such a left leaning philosophy as everything should be fair and equal outcome for everyone has individuals of certain statures in the audience who obviously didn’t have to rely on a lottery or wait in a line. Nice way to set the example Babbs.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:02 am
Who cares what that huss says?!?!?
September 29th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Listening to you, either sing or ramble on, has been boring for years. Don’t you know this, or are you in lala land?
September 29th, 2009 at 8:48 am
I’d rather hear George W. Bush.
September 29th, 2009 at 9:11 am
JUST LOOKING AT BABS MAKES ME PUKE!
September 29th, 2009 at 9:20 am
From What I gather here she is well loved by the Clintons and such but sung badly for roughly 135 people missing the High notes . and publicly dissed one of her most well known Hits …
Pretty soon it’s gonna be …Barbara Who?
September 29th, 2009 at 9:23 am
To hear her sing “People” would be a treat. It is NOT boring. Never was and never will be. She is NOT past her prime. She has one of the most beautiful singing voices in the world. All of you haters can say whatever you want, but you will never bring her down, and not one of you possess a talent 1/100,000,000th of hers. Bring it on. She’s heard it for years from bitter hateful people like you. But she is and will always be a star.
September 29th, 2009 at 9:47 am
It is quite hilarious on how so many people with less talent than what Babs has on her one little finger can be so cruel and unkind. I will tell you who needs to retire and be put way- all you incompetent critics and nasties!! You have not earned the right to criticize her or anyone by hiding behind your “cyber”castle. Disgusting!!
September 29th, 2009 at 10:31 am
“Barbra Streisand, perhaps the greatest performer of her generation”
yeah right nice try
September 29th, 2009 at 10:52 am
Ho-hummmm!
September 29th, 2009 at 11:04 am
the idol worship of ‘Babs’ is boring!! I’m with the voice of reason…give me fingernails and a chalkboard any day! BS is absolutely that…BS!
September 29th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
From reading the previous posts the “Streisand Haters” seem to be out in full force here. The reason they spew negative remarks about Streisand’s music and talent is always based on that fact that they do not agree with her politics or personal convictions. Half the time they do not even listen to the music or watch the videos. They simply do not like her based on their own misconceptions.
People need to appreciate an artist based on their art and not how they feel about then personally. This country’s greatest legends have always been controversial. Streisand is no different and has her strong opinions. I guess the haters don’t realize that her Foundation gives away millions every year.
Anyway, this new Streisand CD produced by Diana Krall is Barbra’s best in years, that is easily confirmed but the great reviews it is getting. So stop the blanket hateful remarks people.
September 29th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
The reason we can not look past her politics is because she wears her politics on her sleeve. She is her politics and she prooved it every time she performed during the Bush years.
The fact that she is a delisional lib does not mean she can’t sing-just that she has no credibility with normal America-normal Americans meaning all of us who are not the elite.
So please Barb-we don’t hate you…we are just tired of all of your “BS”. Slog away into retirement as gracefully as you can-the republicans are coming!!!!!
September 29th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
listening to ‘bab’s sing any song is rather, quite boring. or, as i say, this is gonna be more fun for you than it is for me, old gal. and, it sounds like you don’t enjoy you either. go home.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Incredible voice and music talent, dilusional and misinformed human being.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Streisand is yet another sixties child that follows in the footsteps of Susan Atkins and the rest of the bunch. Time for America to rid itself of the vermin.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Singing “People” made her super rich and it’s boreing?Ungreatful!!
September 29th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Mr. Grump – you can stop being an ass-wipe. I love BS’s politics but that’s the only thing I like about her, so my revulsion at her voice is not what you are postulating here. To me she sounds like she’s all alone in a baseball stadium screaming for help. I cannot listen to her and I wish she would take her million and leave the earth. I have no use for her. So, you are not entirely correct in your obsessive excuses for some people not liking her. Some people just don’t.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Barbra, at 67, is an absolute marvel. The women was born with an incredible voice but also the talent and intelligence to savor such a gift. Year after year, song after song she just keeps giving to all of us. There won’t be and hasn’t been another singer/actress with her level of talent. We probably won’t see it again for another 50 years. Let’s hope she lives beyond a 100 and keeps us all buying her songs.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
how dare this old bag claim that the us govt and bush were responsible for the wtc disaster. alquaeda brought those towers down and because this liberal douchebag hates bush and republicans so much, she and her whipped hubby are 9/11 truthers !
she is a tired dried out no talent whore, who lost her voice years ago…managed to keep that big heeb nose, though. rot babs, rot.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
People…
People who eat … people
Are the hungriest people in the world…
September 29th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Just trying to picture Slick Willie’s face when she mentioned his mom. Pass me the bucket…
September 29th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
Oh Max, calm down. Go back to the shelf and arrange her music in ascending order this time. I can’t stand her politics, but then again, I can’t stand many celebrities politics. I tend to ignore them altogether. I was just checking to see if my mean dad’s soul was going to hear anything new.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
No your wrong. She sucks!!! Her lunatic leftist views make music worse.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
No she’s a no talent ass face like Michael Bolten.
September 29th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Just because someone does not like the music of an artist, it does not make them a hater. If we all liked the same music, damn how boring. I like her music, but not all. I dislike her politics, but not all.
When you accuse someone of being a hater, you have proven you are unable to form a cohesive argument in the debate you have decided to enter. And speaking of debates, why do all statements have to be debated.
So, Mr. Grump, please explain what it is you like about her voice. And just has she done that makes you fell she is controversial? And is it imperative that I like her and/or her music?
September 29th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
So if I don’t appreciate Barbara singing old songs that she herself finds boring I don’t like her politics? It’s due to my own misconceptions of one of the country’s greatest legends?
How about this: I don’t like her singing and I never did. Hearing the same recycled stuff 30 years later is doesn’t make it better.
September 29th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Good for you Max. No doubt the negativity is political. She is an icon. She deserves kudos for her talent, and her good works.
September 29th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Wow, how ironic! I’m bored listening to and looking at Babs anytime she sings!
September 29th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
Ho-Hum….Did you say something Grump? I fell asleep listening to Peeps.
September 29th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
“But the other fans were also pretty remarkable: former president Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with daughter Chelsea and her fiancee, actor James Brolin (Streisand’s husband)…”
This is why you use semi-colons to separate serial lists. Otherwise we all think Chelsea Clinton’s fiance is Streisand’s husband.
September 29th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
What’s really boring is her penchant for liberal politics
September 29th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
The Rolling Stones look they have been performing since the age of the dinosaurs but their song still rock. Streisand, who looks relatively youthful, her songs absolutely suck! Her songs ought to be classified as crowd dispersal devices along with Barry Manilow and Kenny G!!!
September 29th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Who ? What ?
September 29th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Well then… don’t sing it, you idiot!
Why do you? Oh yeah… money. You’re a jester, a monkey doing tricks… someone who would be POOR if not for your God-given voice. And yet, you complain. LOL.
Gee… it’s BORING singing a song for three minutes and making $50,000. Ugh… my poor life… it’s Soooo Harrrd!
As has been said before, you can QUIT!
FINE>…… QUIT~!
But you won’t, because you want the money.
If that’s the case, than STFU.
You have a choice… stop singing and not make money (nothing else you could do) or sing and make money. It’s intellectually dishonest to make sooooo much money and complain about how you have to do it.
Fine… give ALL your money to charity and work at McDonalds. I am sure flipping hamburgers is MUCH more boring.
Freaking elitist, rich, biatch, ungrateful dildo! Ugh!
September 29th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
Barbara who?
Nobody under 50 has even heard of her…which makes them more fortunate than me.
YAWN.
September 29th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Would never listen to her when I was a child, will not listen to her now that I am middle aged. Still wonder however what James Brolin sees in her…wow.
September 29th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Most music today sucks balls. Press a few buttons on a digital multitrack and another carbon copy redundant no inspiration ’song’ comes out…although I’m pushing the definition of ’song’ to even call it that. The vast majority of today’s ‘artists’ never actually learned an ‘art’. They simply squeeze into some tight genes or flash some cleavage. No wonder our society has gone to pot.
September 29th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
babs is boring……
September 29th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
What do you expect!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a boring individual singing a boring song………..she is as interesting as watching the sunrise and sunset over a rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 29th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
You mean…she is still alive ? Thats boring.
Thought she died awile back, a well someday.
September 29th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
Since Barbra Streisand is a musician – among the many other qualifications earned by her throughout five glorious decades of greatness as a supreme artist – there is no value on the negative comments posted here by ignorants of the music subject, since obviously none of the senders here posting them are musicians. Someone talking about medical sciences without been a doctor, or someone talking about the law without been a lawyer, their opinions do not have any importance or credibility. Same here. Learn and inform yourself before daring to participate in a public forum where the only role you can play, because of your ignorance, is the one of a foul. Learn music, become an authority on it, and then you are qualified to talk about Barbra Streisand’s artistry. That will qualify you. Nothing else. If not, you would force me to confirm my theory about the reason why people that nurture their brain with McDonald’s and Coca Cola think the way they do. And this is only about her artistry since I do not want to mingle with the political side. Just the artist’s side. Think about it.
September 29th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Barbara who? Boooooring.
September 29th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
Was there a portable shower stall on stage to enhance her voice?
September 29th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Pretending BS is anything like her young self is boring. Where’s today’s talent?
September 29th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Roger Friedman says Barbra Streisand is perhaps the greatest performer of her generation???
I’ll have what Roger is having, only not a double!
September 29th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Well I nevah evah hoid anyting so wediculous in my life.
September 29th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
she was once good. but now it would be very helpful if she would take this entire audience with her and depart immediately for Somalia.
September 29th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
Streisand can phrase a lyric in such an amazing way that an entire story can be told with one short song. Listen to her presentation of “With One Look” from “Sunset Blvd” and you will understand her genius.

There are scores of artists past their prime who are still ticking. That’s fine. She’s a performer. She makes a living promoting herself. It’s in her blood. Same for all successful performers. There is no one in this world more self absorbed than a successful singer. There’s plenty of them. Of course her political views taint her performances negatively, if you happen to know how to think logically in most situations. It’s all about emotion. That’s why most of the great artists are libs.

I thought Lady GaGa was the greatest singer of our generation….
September 29th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
The problem with Streisand is that she started thinking that her high school education qualified her for more than music.
September 29th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
The vituperative, nasty, judgmental, just plain mean, spiteful comments aren’t really about Streisand, her singing, the music, song selections, or even Roger Friedman’s review.
They are just a a glimpse of how many petty, small-minded, people there are who have no reluctance or sense of self-awareness when they reveal their ignorance, over-inflated sense of self-importance and delusions that their opinions have any value.
All you angry, hateful people ought to just bend over and put your heads back up into the darkness where it belongs.
September 29th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
She’s still alive?
September 29th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
Streisand needs to leave the country like she said she would if Bush came in !!!!! : )
September 29th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Leave Steisand !!!!!! Leave !!! keep your word !!! or your a lier !!!!
September 29th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Streisand even !
September 29th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
Roger Friedman wipe the drool off of your chin and get real. PERHAPS the greatest performer of her generation. You got to be kidding, hence the ‘PERHAPS’. You couldn’t bring yourself to give an honest review of her performance. Hemming and hawing around the fact that she missed a lot of notes. “Pitchy’ as Randy would say. Like Sinatra before her… she has lost her once great voice in her later years. That along with her idiotic political views; should be enough to shut her up for the rest of her life. She needs to pull a Garbo and LEAVE AMERICA alone.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
perhaps the greatest performer of her generation….oh please surly you jest. The same dolts see her over and over again and the masses with taste can’t stomach her nasal twang…and idiotic songs. My god she doesn’t even come close. You insult a large group of truly talented artists with personality and class with your declaration based on political ideology instead of true talent. If I want to hear a truly talented great…maybe the greatest ever female singer I’ll take Elton John any day.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:59 pm
this woman is still around because of her politics and her political contributions. Her audience is comprised of like minded for the most part and her survival is due to her like minded pals in hollywood propping her up as their favorite. She has no audience under 60 and when they pass on she will be forgotten. She is no Sinatra and heck Julie Andrews has a far better voice and class to boot. No babs only has a following not excessive talent just a group of tasteless geezers and political hacks still paying for her….young boy voice
September 30th, 2009 at 12:25 am
What a waste of human space. Hey babs, Obama is yours. His mistakes, all of his lies, they belong to you. You enabled him.
September 30th, 2009 at 12:25 am
Dumb whore, talentless over-the-hill hack.
September 30th, 2009 at 1:44 am
This wasn’t a concert – more like a liberal rally.
September 30th, 2009 at 2:40 am
It’s refreshing to hear Babs taking doing a beatles like ‘get back’ thing, and doing a small venue with a small combo again. Perhaps her tour should also be more like the stones’ 40 licks tour, and have a mix of places of various sizes. I hardly think it’s snobbery in a city of tens of millions (with probably at LEAST one million fans locally), that you needed a lottery for seats to that show. I only wish they had webcast the show LIVE. Good to know she’s NOT like Cher and will keep putting out great music, as one of the last great talents of her generation still touring.
September 30th, 2009 at 2:50 am
Barbara Streisand is terrible. She’s an ok singer who made a bunch of ok films in the 1970s. If the incompetent government, failure in businesses were not enough, Barbara Streisand is the final proof that Baby Boomers are the most worthless generation ever.
September 30th, 2009 at 2:57 am
Great. Now that everyone recognizes that the voice is gone, she can take a chance and get her hideous nose fixed.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:01 am
All of her overreaching aside, if Streisand truly believes in her comfy Hollywood lefty jargon, she’d be happily offering soulless IRS government bureaucrats free reign to force her bank/taxman to ‘redistribute’ all her royalty checks which I’m sure she isn’t so bored with. Hey, why not ALL her royalty checks ‘redistributed’ in service of her Marxist god? Oh, I forgot, the vaunted ‘redistribution’ they self-importantly pontificate about is only for us commoners, not the false gods of corrupt, has-been Hollywood icons. D’jever see a more mortibund crowd of ego-centric wannabe-important graspers as her audience? This out of touch puff piece’s misspelling of god notwithstanding, there are better uses of that word referenced herein.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:13 am
Barb, all is lost. When you talk, you are also boring. Imagine the suffering you have spread with your opinions.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:56 am
are you sure it wasn’t a clinton fundraiser or obama fundraiser? That is the only thing this has been does lately. Clearly all the players were pleasant. I wonder what her own mother would have thought to know that Clinton’s mom was her ’surrogate mother’. Good grief.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:57 am
*present* (pleasant was a typo)
September 30th, 2009 at 4:15 am
Yeah Babs, even lighting a joint didn’t help…..
September 30th, 2009 at 4:36 am
She’s a has-been though she’s aging pretty well. I liked her until she started inserting politics into her musical shows – THAT’S boring (and wrong-headed)! I’d have thought she’d have done at least one or two notable things within the last few decades. In the great, grand Cosmic scheme of things, she is very simply a human being who is / was able to sing well, do some acting (”pretending to be other people”) period and no big deal. I know creative people just as talented who weren’t motivated to organize their life around “being on a stage” or lucky or connected enough to be “marketed.” Consider what “fame” really is: a lot of people “know of” you. Big deal. I’d also add that I consider her to be just another misguided idol of the unthinking masses, like Obama … one who has developed a following based on superficials w/out true serious consideration of what she (& he) stands for: Arrogance, haughtiness and megalomaniacal self-centeredness.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:06 am
She is a liberal “B”…I also wish she would go far, far away! It’s unfortunate that she didn’t move out of the country when she threatened it! booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
James Brolin must be blind, deaf and out of his mind!
September 30th, 2009 at 8:20 am
By reading these comments it’s easy to see the stupidity that gave us Obama. Most can’t put two damn words together and most can’t spell and most can’t see past their own prejudices to make an intelligent remark. Most, but not all, please crawl back into your cave and continue with your hieroglyphs, come out when you have something of value to say.. Till then, learn the meaning of the word compassion and that a person’s vocal gift has nothing to do with their political stand. You may not like her politics but what has that got to do with her voice.
September 30th, 2009 at 8:55 am
What else can you expect from a woman who DEMANDS fresh flower blossum pedals be kept in her commodes/water closets while she is on the road?
September 30th, 2009 at 11:14 am
“Barbra Streisand, perhaps the greatest performer of her generation”
Were you on something when you wrote this? Good grief, she’s not even in the top 10 greatest performers of all time, MJ is for sure at the top of the list easily.

Streisand is okay. But she’s no Michael Jackson!

Barbra Streisand is the greatest star! Barbra Streisand possesses the voice of God! Barbra Streisand is mysteriously beautiful!
