It was announced a couple of weeks ago, but if you weren’t paying attention, today was a little weird in the NY cable world.
CNN has been demoted by Time Warner Cable to Channel 78. It’s been 10 on the “dial” for many, many years. Now it’s been catapulted into the outer space of the cable dial in the country’s most important media market.
In its place, a channel that absolutely no one needs or was missing: FX. They show “Nip/Tuck,” and re-runs of Fox movies and TV shows.
Also demoted was Lifetime, traded with Oprah’s Oxygen Network. So just at the moment that cable’s most popular reality show, “Project Runway,” comes to Lifetime, the channel is sent to Siberia.
But the CNN change is really ridiculous. Everyone knows the lower number channels get the higher traffic. And while CNN has lagged in ratings for a few years, it’s still the number 1 news destination when there’s a crisis. The next time there’s a terrorist bombing a lot of people may be watching “That 70s Show,” wondering if Wolf Blitzer has been replaced by Ashton Kutcher.
Different reports have suggested that channels pay extra to get top billing. Interestingly, both TNT and TBS have retained excellent spots on the Time Warner lineup. They, like CNN, are owned by Time Warner. So this begs the questions: did Time Warner not care what happened to CNN? Did they think TNT and TBS were more important? It sure seems like it.

TWC is putting like channels grouped together in a way that THEY say will make it easier to find for example news w/news, sports w/sports, womens…get it. I’m in Cinci.,Oh. and a TWC subscriber and w/ our upcoming bill will come a new channel lineup. Nobody is happy to play the NEW HEADACHE GAME, WHERE THE F IS…just suck it up and deal like the rest of us.

Really, why the hell should anyone care about what number a cable channel is? It’s not like your forced to go thru the channels one by one from 1 up. Like people are going to watch CNN any less or any more now. Biggest waste of space ever!!!!

I must disagree a bit with your assessment of F/X.
F/X aired The Shield, which was a fantastic show. It is also home to Damages and Denis Leary’s great show Rescue Me. Nip/Tuck is awful (though I enjoyed the first season) but there are some programs worth watching on F/X.
Fox News on the other hand….

It’s interesting that Comcast recently downgraded MSNBC’s channel from mid-50s to above 75, cutting off people with the base (silver) package up to 75 channels altho CNN and Fox News remain in the 50s. And people were pissed – Comcast suddenly had to issue additional mini-boxes so people could continue getting MSNBC without upgrading to next package, and customers were lined up out the door to get these. Comcast claimed it was MSNBC’s wish to move out of basic cable range…yeah, sure, I work in TV and that’s impossible, but I’ll bet it was a Comcast ploy to either get more subscriber $$ out of NBCU or a negotiating ploy in a larger cable carriage dispute.

MEANT TO MENTION: this was done in Philly, not nationwide as far as I know

I am sorry to disagree but most people now watch FOX News for their breaking news and so that is why CNN is bumped…but of course, you are to liberal to listen to a REAL news outlet, now aren’t you?
CNN is a laughing stock…I don’t want someone to TELL me what to think, I want to be given the facts so I can then make my own decisions. The same is true for MSNBC and other channels who like to tell me one side of the news. Sick of ‘em…and why they are moving on down the channel line up…

Roger your reporting is almost always good but I don’t think Oprah has owned any part of Oxygen for a little while. She’s now launching another channels and I believe all of her shares were absorbed by NBC or someone else when NBC purchased Oxygen.

Next to the frustration at network channels canceling shows in their prime– and without notice to their loyal followers (ie NBC’s Las Vegas & Lipstick Jungle), is the channel lineup.
From one person who has to help her grandmother find stations after they move and shows that have been cancelled– it’s beyond frustrating and to the point it’s easier to get the damn things on DVD than to subscribe to cable anymore! … and I’m getting close to doing just that.

“Everyone knows the lower number channels get the higher traffic.” Everyone knows? This may have been the norm in the past, but is it any longer? I don’t think so. Personally speaking, I hardly EVER watch the lower-numbered channels anymore. And CNN has ALWAYS been located at a higher channel number wherever I’ve lived.

Hmmmm…. all the more reason to get away from Time Warner Cable. Thanks for the low down!

Right Anne, because fox news is right down the middle! You’re a drone and you don’t even know it. Sad.
